Tba House tonigtrt by a foU of >04 to 174 refuted to submit to t bo Mat in amendment to the Federal ooasii ution to enfranchise women. A two-thirds majority would hove seen necessary for ad coition of the .evolution submitting the amend- . ment Hundreds of women who had sat n the crowded galleries throughout he eight hours of debate, greeted ho announcement of the reault with arlwl expressions of approval or dis approval. Dejection mingled with I 'Dthuslacm as the purple and yellow atihea of the suffragists and the red ose bedecked ant I -suffragists filed jut into the House corridors, wear d with the long strain of oratory. It was the second defeat suffered by the euffrage cause in Congress within a year. On March 19. last an equal suffrage constitutional amendment received a vote of IS to 34 in the Senate, obtaining a bare majority, but not the necessary two ;hlrds. Suffragist leaders, undismayed by the reeult of tonight's vote, declared ?.hat the fight was by no means over. Dr. Anna Howard Shaw and other jromlnent suffragists who sat with ler In the gallery through Che de ?ate, predicted a more favorable re sult when Congress again Is called jn to vote on the question. Anti suffragists were well satisfied. "The result was what we expect ed,' said Mrs. Arthur M. Dodge, President of the National Associa tion Opposed to Woman Suffrage. "It means that the suffrage move ment. fostered by hysterical women, is on the wane." A large attendance on the floor ind galleries filled to overflowing, llstwned to the debate on the resolu tion which at times was vigorous *nd .almost bitter.
