Washington, P. C.,^July 17. ?
Congress should appropriate for one'
hundred submarines at the next ses
sion, according to a statement Issued
(here today by the National Defense
League.
"A recent account, widely printed
by the press, that the General Navy
Boaft' will recommend appropria
tions for at least thirty submarines
and Chat these wtll be included in
4he naval estimates to be ssnt to the
next Congress by "Secretary Daniels,
Is alright as far as It goes, but It
does not go far enough," according
to the League's statement. I
must make provision for
mors thsc three times that number
of undersea boats," declares ths
statement. |
1 The League has launched a cam-!
palgn throughout the country to a
rouse public sentiment for one biih
dred subtnarlnes <in the next nsral
bin.' It win, agitate the Question of
an adequate number of submsrlnes
until Congress convenes n^*t De
cember.
In this campaign the League will
hsve the support of powerful mem
ber* or Congress. A letter received
by the eLague todsy from Repre
sentative William D. Stephens, of
Los Angeles, Cal., as follows:
"I am more than ever convinced
that the United States should have
another hundred submsrlnes, at
least fifty of them stationed on the
Pacific Coast, more battleships, and
several battle ertfienrs, besides la j
sufficient number of auxiliary -ves
sels."
"The United Btatea now has a
total of 70 submarines, biAJJt or
bulldTng, but many of those now In
commission are obsolete and prac
tical worthies*. If Congress will
provide at t?he next session 100 new
submarines, with the submarines
now suthorlsed, or building, with
those that are in commission which
srs really efficient snd seaworthy,
the Navy will then have a fleet of
spproxtmatsly 150. undersea bouts
that will bs ample to protect the
Atlantic and Pacific Coast lines,
Alftftka, Hawaii, ths Philippines, and
the Panama Canal," Is the assertion
of Mis League.
"Wlfle most of the new subma
rines should bs toast and harbor
defense vessels a uttabls proportion

cruising radius of at legat S.000
