It will lie easy sailiug for luost.of the merchant* now until the big I sale* that will l?e turned Ioom' next mouth. ' 4 Three breweries in St. L uis have filed petitions of bankruptcy I during the last month. It only goes to show that prohibition agita tor* are brewing trouble for the brewers. The ladies who had charge of the Christmas tree celebration de sire to thank the citizens for their generous aid; but we feel that it is more fitting for the citizen* to thank the ladies for the important | part they played iu making the tree a success. Of course we don't desire to stir up any trotiWc, but if Colonel Roosevelt will onlv let the people hear a little chirp from him once] in a while it would make the world a great deal more natural. OUR INTEREST IN PEACE. A new an^le to the present peace negotiations has been revealed. It is claimed that President Wilson's efforts are being used to bring about peace in order to avoid a break between this country and Germany, of which there is considerable danger. Mr. Wilson's course in this connection is sure io meet general ap proval on the part of the people of the Fnited States. His hope is to bring about peace before the United States is dragged into the war. He will use every effort to bring the negotiations to a fiue ees?f\d close [>>r lie knows that if the peace proposals are rejected there will be grave danger of the I'll! ted States breaking with Ger many. Recent information which lis* leaked out from the Slate Depart ment. upjteavs to indicate that relations with Germany are far more critical than the public imagines. FoV that reason, tll0 administra tion will do everything possible to further peace negotiations. This dee* ?>??? mean that the 1'uited State* fears Germany in any wnv, but official* realize that it would bo of much greater advantage] io the I'liiied State- to have an to the great war than t ? lw drawn] tnio it herself. I Til I*! UK 1 1 II I I.I. I JO AD. I.ast summer. k committee eanvaascd the Imaine** men of rhe city and raised several thou-amL dollars for the building of a concrete n?ud from Washington to Ked Hill, in Chocowinitv township. The resident* of Chorowinity also raised some money for this purpose and the,Uiard of coininiiuiners passed an appropriation to nssist in the work. Aftr practically all of the money was raised. it was decided that it vronM he too late to do any work on the road as the opening of the tphacoo market would take place in-fore the work could he com pleted. Jt was therefore decided to postpone any construction until next Spriwr. There i.a still much work to l>e done. Of courw the majority of those citizens who pledged themselves to contribute to the fund, will probably allow their plodges to stand, but there are some who have moved away and - there arc others who may not feel able to give as much as they promised. For this reason, it would be wise if the Chamber of Commerce took up the matter at the next meeting and decide upon immediate action. TKe need fr?r h good road through the three mrles of swamp on the orhei side r?f the river will be more urgent next year than this. There will be more tobacco raised in the Chocowinitv section and there will* also be a greater amount of trad* to Washington. It is there fore essential that the road be built as soon as possible.
