People seem to be having quite l a time trying to get their tobacco to market owing to the con1 ditions of the roads, caused by r so much rain. r Capt. W. T. White of the State SEVEN Tobacco Shows Missing Foods Absence Of Any Of Nine Essential Elements Gives Definite, Distinctive Appearance To The Leaf of Plant Some plants tell their own story of what plant food is lacking in the soil where they grow. This is particularly true of to* bacco, according to investigators in the United States Department of Agriculture. They have found that absence of any one of nine essential elements gives it a definite, distinctive appearance. This suggests the possibility of growing tobacco in any soil to show what plant food elements are most deficient Chemical analysis shows what elements are in a soil, but does not, as a rule, accurately measure their availability. Experiments have shown that some other crops have distinctive markings when essentia' elements are missing?but usu ally these marking are not s< clearly defined as in the tobaco plant, where differences in grow th and coloring are readily seen because of its broad, sensitive leaves. The first experiments in determining the effect of missing elements on plant growth were conducted by growing tobacco plants in solutions containing in each case all essential elements save one and in the approximate proportions needed by the growing plant. Since then tobacco has been grown in infertile soils with certain essential plant food elements withheld. The distinctive effect produced by each missing element has been*- the same as when the plants were grown in liquid solutions. J. E. McMurtrey, of the Bureau of Plant Industry, who conducted the experiments, found that a deficiency of nitrogen is shown by the whole plant assuming a light green color, with more or less nll/M.,tn<v /*? rlmrlnnr nn a# f V? a of tasty and wholesame dishes if . the extra vegetables are properly j stored in cellars, attics, or other , suitable places. Storing of vegetables also lightens the annual canning work. Beets, late cabbage, carrots, ( celery, onions, parsnips, potatoes, , sweetpotatoes, salsify, pumpkins, , squash, and turnips may be stor- ' ed in their natural condition. Beans of various kinds, including . the limas, may be dried and stor- . ed. ( A half-acre garden, according to horticulturists of the United States department of Agriculture, will, if properly cared for, produce enough vegetables for year-around use by the average family. Cellars 'containing a furnace usually are too warm and dry for storing root crops, but a room may be partitioned off in one corner or end of the cellar and the temperature controlled by means of outside windows. Storage Solves Surplus Problem Each Year Gardner Has Problem Disposing of Excess Vegetables During Summer; Should Save for Winter Each year the average gardener has a surplus problem. His garden normally produces more vegetables during the summer than he and his family can consume. This surplus?of little value in the summer?can be used during the winter in preparing a variety , tyciiv;vvutg yi uijruig up wi uio lower leaves to a light brown color. A shortage of phosphorous on the other hand produces a plant that is abnormally dark green in color with some drying of the lower leaves to a greenish brown or black color. A shortage of calcium first becomes apparent as a peculiar hooking downward of the tips of the young leaves composing the bud, followed by a breaking down of these leaves at the tips and margins. Equally distinctive effects were produced by shortages of potassium, magnesium, boron, sulphur, manganese, and iron. These contrasts were the basis for the 'key" to deficiency effects constructed by Dr. McMurtrey. *1 Casings Must Be Marked at Plant Government Markings Must Be Printed Plainly On Meat Casings Before They Are Stuffed Housewives will be able to read required governmental markings sn colored artificial casings for meat products more easily after October 1, 1935.
