Aiken, jninerinlcndent of the prison camp, said Skipper phoned the prison camp but did not talk to the superintendent. who was sick. There was no one at the prisor camp at that time who could b< sent. Aiken said, adding that prison guards have made 'four or five" trips "over there" trying to capture the elusive escaped convict. Recently John Bray, prison official, has made several trips into Brunswick county seeking tc capture the man but all his efforts have been unavailing. Prison records show Mintz escaped from Carteret county prison camp in January, after being convicted in New Hanover county in 19:15 for the theft of two automobiles. It was understood that after the prison camp refused this morning to send aid to capture Mintz. Skipper sent three wires to Raleigh, one of which is believed to be the one of which the governor spoke. Henderson said that he took the money, but warned Motley to "leave that other stuff alone; it will get us in trouble." Their booty was carried back to the Orton boathousc and stored in the attic, where it. later was recovered by the investigating officers. Friday night, once more in the search of food, the boys broke into the Sprant house. Several articles were misplaced by them, but none were missed. This is typical of the friendly cooperation that has been shown from every source, and it is basis for the licliel' that this regatta at Southport, which begins tomorrow, will be i one of the outstanding events i of its kind of the entire / season. Swain, of Salemburg, spent the week-end at their homes here, j Miss Agnes Russ visited relatives in Wilmington during the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Stanley were in Wilmington Friday night. Put Ion in the interest of sport by i sportsmen. None of these sportsmen have a thought of making anything at all. How could they? The prize, they hope to win is costing less than $10.00. To win, or rather to have just a chance of winning some of the sportsmen are coming hundreds of miles and bring|ing their boats at much expense. Some of them will expend two or three hundred dollars just to come to Southport and take a1 sporting effort at the prize in the class in which their boats are eligible. It is an all-round sporting pro: position. We should try and meet sports in a sporting way when they come here Thursday, Friday and Saturday. And it is not just the folks from a distance whoj should be met in a sporting spir-. it. To be perfectly frank about it, Southport would not have' been able to stage this event: with any semblence of the pres-, ent assured success if it had not been for the sporting spirit of our friends of the Carolina Yaoht I Club of Wrightsville. Having been close to many of J them in this effort. I can say , from personal knowledge, that ( our Wilmington friends have all f shown the finest of sportsman- ^ ship, a sportsmanship for which v we should show our appreciation, i Southport, Aug. 10, 19:17. .1 W.
