A scientist is someone who spends all his time and money trying to discover something to make somebody else rich. When fishing, its an ill wind that blows. T hanksgiving Our preacher spoke Sunday about those of us who are prone to be Pharasaic in our Thanksgiving, who, having taken note of the suffering and pestilance common in other lands, say with the Pharasee: "Oh, Lord, we thank Thee that we are not as other men." To use the sufferings of others as foundation stone for elevating ourselves to a position of thankfulness is in defiance of the spirit of gratitude, and smacks of smugness. This year it will not suffice to be thankful for the things we have that others have not, but rather should this Thanksgiving season be a period for thoughtful evaluation of our place as a nation in the new world order, and of the contributions that we may make through sacrifice to make this new order tenable. Each day that we stay out of the present European conflict it appears that we get that much further away from active participation, but no nation now in existance will be able to escape the reprecussions of this madness. It is for our opportunity to use all the resources at our com mand for good that we should be truly thankful, and if we have a reverent attitude of gratefulness we'll dedicate the efforts of our people toward the restoration of world sanity. Emphasis On Patriotism We note with approval that considerable emphasis is being given to patriotism in the schools of our county. It is a natural thing for youth to seek something to which it can give its enthusiastic response, and no better outlet for this feeling of exhuberance can be found than in outspoken allegiance to the United States. A mind filled with patriotism for America is no place for sowing the seeds of un-American activities. Balanced Prosperity Some of the best minds in the state are now at work formulating plans for a program designed to bring Balanced Prosperity to the South during the decade be i:n 1940-1950. i-ery county in North Carolina is orzed, and every citizen of our state be given an opportunity for active icipation. This is a program designed eceive considerable publicity, but e will not be any danger of over emsis. The future of residents of this secof the United States is tied up with success of this program. B. Keziah's Work (Editorial By Carl Goerch In The State) Elsewhere in this issue is an article dealing with Southport, Bald Head Island and other places. Mention also is made in that article of one W. B. Keziah, about whom we would like to tell you a little more. To our way of thinking, this man Keziah is the greatest civic booster to be found in North Carolina. We don't know of another man like him in Winston-Salem, Raleigh, Charlotte, Asheville or any other city you might mention. He has the misfortune of being totally deaf, but it is really no handicap to him. He is secretary of the Southport Chamber of Commerce and supplements his income by corresponding for some of the newspapers. It is needless to say that he'll never be classed as a wealthy man because of the income he derives from these sour ces W. B. Keziah, however, isn't interested in wealth. As a matter of fact, there's only one thing in which he's interested?and that's Southport. If he had only five dollars in the world, and it was a question of investing that five dollars in some proposition for the advancement of Southport and going hungry the next week, Old Man Keziah wouldn't hesitate for a moment. He'd give the five dollars for the advancement of Southport. We don't know whether his sendees are appreciated or not. We have found in the past that many communities don't pay much attention to matters of this kind. They take them for granted. We hope, however, that such is not the case down in Brunswick county. If ever a section~of the state owed a man a debt of gratitude, the folks in the vicinity of Southport owe that debt to W. B. Keziah. They can never hope to pay him in money for the services he has rendered: the least they can do, therefore, is to let him know that they are genuinely appreciative. His is an entirely unselfish service. North Carolina needs more men like him. A Plea In Behalf Of The Valiant Greeks The gallant defense of their country, their ideals, their liberty and their honor which the Greeks have for the past several weeks been putting up against tremendous odds against their Italian aggressors has gained for them the admiration of the entire civilized world. But as the Charlotte Observer so aptly put it last week, admiration is not enough "It lacks being enough in respect to Americans. Into this great and free land of ours have come multitudes of these people from Greece as immigrants. For the greater part they have always proven themselves loyal, patriotic, and constructive citizens. They are law-abiding, industrious, frugal, and decent. They belong to a race that is old and proud and respected for its contributions to the arts and to literature. Theirs has been a long past of glory and of progress. "Their country at the moment is being invaded by a ruthless tyrant, who has contemtouously referred to them within the last few hours as a hateful people whose backs he would break. Not that they have done any wrong, but they are in the way of Mussolini and Hitler as they attempt to reach out and cut the bread-line of the Eno-lish. "The only crime which these Greeks have committed therefore, is that of being geographically set in such a position as to interfere with the diabolic designs of the Axis powers as they make relentless war against human freedom in the Old World. They must either give up or be wiped off the map. "It is unthinkable that, with'out substantial military aid from England, and without corresponding material and commodity aid from the United States, the cause of this gallant people will long survive. The odds against them are all but immeasurable. They are holding out and even more than that for the present, but they are beginning to feel the pinch and their countrymen over here have modestly and without noise-making started a movement by which they hope to be able to send them substantial assistance." In this community, Friday a committee to solicit funds for the relief of the beleagured Greeks was appointed, and this coming Friday a canvass will be made for this purpose. The News Reporter unhesitatingly urges every citizen of this community and county to respond generously to the call for aid to these brave, noble and valiant people. Shears And Paste "WEEP NO MORE" (From The Christian Science Monitor) The "young folks" doubtless are happy about it?"all merry, and happy, and bright.". They couldn't have been better pleased, or their elders, either. For he is an old, old friend, and all of them sing his songs, from the time they are able to catch a pitch from a tuning fork and to follow the teacher's beat. Yes, at long last, Stephen Collins Foster, the untutored genius who touched the hearts of his countrymen?and of the world?as have but two or three writers of songs, has been awarded a niche in the Hall of Fame at New York University. It is ninety-eight years since he wrote his first song and three-quarters of a century since he laid down his pen, Ignored and neglected. "? .
