Scientists Find
Blue Mold Cure
[Blue Mold Is No Longer
Considered The Frightening
And Deadly Enemy
Of Flue Cured Leaf
I Growers
Blue mold, which once swept
j unchecked through North Caroj
lina tobacco plant beds, is no
j longer the frightening and deadly
enemy of flue-cured leaf growiers.
I Plant disease scientists have
| found effective means of curbing
j its progress through the magic
| of chemicals, says Don E. Ellis
1 and Howard R. Garriss, extension
plant pathologists of State
I College.
Dmonstrations conducted in
various tobacco-growing sctions
sections of the state earlier in
j the year proved the effectiveness
| of paradichlorobenzene and red
[ copper oxide as economical and
| beneficial agents in halting the
disease.
Under a wide range of local
conditions, the demonstrations
showed a uniformly high degree
of success. Complete figures were
pent on 28 demonstrations in 13
counties.
Ellis and Garriss reported that
plants were pulled from the treated
beds on an averaee of .la rta??
- -? p- ? - -"J"
earlier than from the untreated
beds. At the time of the first
pulling-, an average of 3,474 more
plantp were secured from each
100 square yards of treated beds
than from the untreated. For the
season, an average of 12,929 more
plants were pulled.
When paradichlorobezene, or
PDB as it is sometime known,
was used, narrow plant beds were
recommended and used in a majority
of cases. These beds were
5 feet 8 inches wide. However,
wider beds were used to some extent
and gave good results when
tightly constructed and when sufficient
cross pieces were provided
to support the heavy cover.
