Governor Decries :
Highway Deaths
Nearly 1,300 People Lost j
Their Lives In State On
Highways During 1941
Governor Broughton has recently
issued the following statement: ]
"Nearly thirteen hundred people
lost thfeir lives in automobile accidents
on the highways of North
Carolina in 1941. Fatalities during
the present month of Jan
luary 1942 give indication that (
this will be an equally bloody j
jyear, unless something drastic is j
jdone. This is a record that is t
j shocking to every North Carolin- r
ian; and something must be done s
about it. As Governor of the State
I am charged with the duty of f
executing in general the laws of ^
the state; and as members of
the Highway Patrol you are specifically
charged with patrolling c
and regulating the traffic on the !j
state highways. I am going to
| try to do my part of the job in
cutting down this terrible list of
i fatalities and serious accidents, i
and I am calling on you to do
well your part.
"Speed is undoubtedly the major
factor in fatal highway ac- c
cidents. It is possible that the (
speed limit in this state is too r
high, but the fact is that even t
the speed limit we have is violated
almost with impunity in
every section of the state. This *
must end if we arc to have a "
better record of safety. I have
asked the Highway Commission f
to fix modified speed zones for s
all military areas, congested .
traffic zones, hazardous curves, ]
dangerous intersections, and other '
places which in the opinion of the
Commission require special zoning 1
and marking. They will do this
promptly and will place markers <
