C. ?h?^ Army In Need Of Volunteers Men Between 18 and 26 Years Of Age Especially Desired For Aviation Cadet Training t Attention of men of Whiteville and vicinity is called to the fact that an army mobile recruiting unit win visit Lumberton on Wednesday and Tnursday, August 12 and 13th, and will be located at the office, offering an opportunity to investigate the many opportunities now offered by the various branches of the army. The army is in need of young men to apply for service immediately, and to join in the fight to "slap the Japs. New glider training is open to men 18 to 36 years of age inclusive, with or without previous flight training. | Men between 18 and 26 inclusive are especially desired for aviation cadet training. After seven and one half months train- J ing at $75.00 a month a cadet re- I reives a commission as a second lieutenant with pay ranging from $225.00 to $265.00 a month. Vacancies also exist in the parachute troops, corps of engineers and numerous other branches, and young men 18 and 19 may pick the branch of service they desire. All men 18 to 45 years of age are eligible to enlist in some branch of the army. Recruits begin by drawing $50 per month im mediately upon enlistment. Camel Caravan Touring Camps Unit Travelling Over Country Entertaining The Soldiers Of The U. S. 'Army Camps The "Camel Caravans" are on the march for Uricle Sam. Four complete road shows, sponsored by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, makers of Camel cigarettes, are touring the nation providing free entertainment to the men in the service. As this goes to press they have played a total of 750 performances to more than a million Crvlrliorc .Qflllnrq Marines and Coast Guardsmen in camps and stations. The first "Camel Caravan" hit the road July 31, 1941. They've been at it ever since. Four performances a day in some camps to audiences, of 15,000 to 20,000 men. Judged by the applause of the men, and the letters of appreciation received from morale officers, the shows have proved as big a hit with the men in the service as the cigarette they represent. For according to actual sales records in Post Exchanges, Sales Commissaries, Ship's Stores, and Cantoans Camels are the favorite cigarette in all the services?Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. A vera To Head OASI Offices WASHINGTON. Aug. 3.? The appointment of Nicholas Avera as manager of the Old - Age and Survivors Insurance office at Wilmington was announced today by G. R. Parker, Regional Director of the Social Security Board. "Mr. Avera was connected with the Wilmington office for a short time during 1939, after which he was promoted to the position of assistant manager at Raleigh. During the past two years he has served as manager of the Morganton ? Hickorj area. The Social Security Board office, located in the Custom House Building at Wilmington, serves the counties of Bladen, Columbus, Brunswick, New Hanover, Onslow, Jones, Craven, Carteret, Pamlico, and Pender. 34 Places In County Sell Beer There are 34 places of business in Columbus County licensed by the sta'.e to Sell beer at retail. Figures, compiled by the North Carolina Committee of the Brewing Industry Foundation as of August 1, disclosed that the State Department of Revenue has issued retail beer licenses to 3.398 outlets in 98 counties. 3ale of beer Is not permitted in Yancey and Mitchell counties.
