Ruark, who also won the traveling heart prize, a cannister set. Mrs. Fred Willing was se cond high and was presented with a box of candy. Mrs. E. M. Mc Eachern won a box of candy as bingo prize. Second Prize In Mammoth Flower Show Goes To Brunswick County En tries, Even Though Com ! peting With Hot-House F lowers At the Savannah, Ga., Camellia j Show on February 9th and 10th, ! the exhibits from Ortor. Planta j tion Gardens won second prize against the very discouraging I odds of being in the same class as hot house plants. The Orton j flowers are all grown in the open, [ and second prize for Orton in I competion with greenhouse class is something to be proud of. The flowers were carried to ; Savannah by James Ferger, man ( ager of the plantation gardens, and Kenneth Sprunt, son of the | owners. Young Mr. Sprunt is J taking an active interest in the i management of Orton this year. The two local men state that something like 4,000 camellia blossoms were exhibited at the show, to which nearly five thou sand people paid admission. The show at Savannah is rated as i the largest annual event of its kind in the United States. A great many varieties of camellias are no* in bloom on the 25 or 30 acres of plantation gardens and nursery grounds. Many azaleas are also coming I into bloom. With reasonably j mild weather the peak of the camellia blooming season will be reached in two weeks and the azaleas will be at their peak dur ing the period from March 15th, | to April 10th. With travel restrictions off, a great many tourists and other ! visitors are now coming to the I gardens. The indications point to this year's attendance of visitors j breaking all records. Mrs. Frank Mintz Is Club Hostess The Bolivia Home Demonstra | tion Club met at the home of i Mrs. Frank Mintz for its Feb j ruaiy meeting. The meeting was called to order by Mrs. Bill Kopp who acted as president. "America" was sung and the collect repeat ed. The roll was called and minutes were read. Mrs. O. C. Burton and Mrs. Frank Mintz were elected mem bership chairmen. Mrs. Foster Mintz and Mrs. Harold Willetts were elected 4-H Club leaders. Mrs. Bill Kopp was elected re creation leader. All members present discussed the County Council meeting to be held at Supply February 22nd at 3 o'clock. The meeting was turned over to Miss McLamb who gave an interesting talk on "Homestead Planning" and the proper way to fix the yard and walks. Miss McLamb also led a discussion on the right way to can meat. Everyone present enjoyed the re creation program directed by Miss McLamb. Mrs. J. W. Weathers of Golds boro has been spending several days here with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. David Watson have returned to Louisburg after spending part of last week here with Mrs. Ida Potter Watson. Miss Ellie Ford Hinson of Dur ham spent the week end here with her father, Rev. O. I. Hinson. j Organization Helps Replace Fire Loss Members of the Kings Daugh ters have raised a small sum of money and have collected some clothing and other useful gifts for the family of Hobirt Williams, who lost all of their belongings when the Will Smith Service Sta tion at Midway burned about two weeks ago. Mrs. Lou H. Smith, who de livered these gifts, says that if other people have donations which they would like to make will be glad to see that they teach the Williams family. The monthly meeting of the Kings Daughters at which this business was transacted met with Mrs. Ethel Fulwood Thursday night. OUT OF SERVICE Edward Taylor, son of Mrs. C. Ed Taylor, received his honorable discharge from the Army at Fort Bragg Sunday. He recently re turned to the United States fol lowing seveial months Pacific duty, the last part of which was spent in Japan. Miss Sellers Is Hostess To Club The Shallotte Village Home Demonstration Club met February 4th at 2 o'clock at the home of Miss Lottie Sellers. The meeting was called to order by the presi dent, Miss Lottie Selleis. The club program was carried out in order. Miss Alene McLamb, home agent, showed slides of homes and grounds on the subject of hemestead planning, and the club members gained interesting; points on planning grounds sunounding their homes. The meeting adjourned, then ! Miss McLamb lead the recreation for the club. Mrs. Bert Williams joined the club as a new member, j The hostess, with the help of | Miss Mary Gwen Chadwick, serv- 1 ed hot coffee and pecan cake to seventeen members. Mrs. B. C. " Musical Program At Lei and Friday With the aim of adding to the scholarship fund of the Leland high school, an old time Fiddlers' Convention will be staged at the Leland school Friday night of this week. The affair is being spon sored by the Leland Lions Club and a fine program has been ar , ranged with $40.00 in prizes be ing offered for the various events. Judge Furnishes Own Evidence Probably thinking that it might look bad if he twice forgot to bring in samples of the tobacco plants he was bragging about last week, Judge John B. Ward drop ped in at The Pilot office Mon day with an ice cream cup full of evidence. While the evidence was not quite so tall as his original story, the tobacco plants were unques tionably well developed, with leaves about the size of a quar ter. Cage Games Are Played In County Leland scored a double victory over the Southport high school basketball teams Friday night, the boys winning 25 to 11 and the girls by a score of 20 to 11.
