OPEN FORUM Boca Grande, Fla. 't March 15, 1946 j Editor, State Port Pilot Southport, N. C. Dear Sir: On my way home from here last Spring, I stopped over in J Brunswick county for a few days to visit relatives. And while it hijd only been a short while since I had visited there. I was pleased to note the progression that has occurred throughout the county in recent years. Especially so in the farming industry. I travelled h^me by bus. which afforded me the chance of observing things closely and in no other state j through which I travelled or in 1 iany other county of North Caro lina was the general improve ments more noticeable than in your county. 1 I think the correspondence of D. B. Edwards, in a recent issue of The State Port Pilot, was very timely, and hope to soon see some developments along the lines suggested by him pertaining [ to the drainage question of land in Waccamaw township. X have thought for a good many years that his township contains j some of the best land in the' county. My brother, Eugene, at Shallotte, has a copy of the Southport paper of the date of 1906, as I remember, which con tains an article written by myself wherein I expressed the belief that road improvements would bring about a transformation in the Waccamaw section of the i county, and I think with the de velopments of the road system, together with what might be made possible through a drain- : age system, would be an incen- j tive that would attract anyone desirous of obtaining good farm ; . . . Also in way of reminiscence, I think Miss Johnson is right on I the date of the Charleston earth quake being 18S6 instead of 1888, and I recall that some men who were working in the turpentine woods reported that they felt a tremor several days after the main occurrence and saw a move ment of a dead tree top that was lying on the ground, which so [ frightened them that they left I the woods and never returned for : several days. | Am glad to see that the shrimp industry there is growing, and hope you may be able to get something done in the way of facilities to take care of sports fishermen, for I believe with hotel accommodations plenty of fishermen would be attracted to j that section of the state, which | would be a lot to your town. j Think the Pilot is a good news- 1 paper and I think your column, ! "Our Roving Reporter" helps ; greatly to make it so. One of the I editorials that I read on the cause ' of the war, was carried by The Pilot. With best wishes for the paper. Very truly, GEO. H. GRAY OPEN FORUM Editor, State Port Pilot, Southport, N. C. Dear Sir: I wish to express by view of the Brunswick County Basketball Games of 1946. In witnessing the many basket- ; ball games as I did, especially the final games, I noticed the fair and impartial part that the re feree played. I also noticed the fine sportsmanship demonstrated from each school. There was j one thing that impressed me \ more than anything else ? when the Leland grammer grade boys ' took, the floor, and did such a wonderful job. I wonder if our other schools in Brunswick coun ty have given our grammar > grade boys and girls the showing j they have the right to expect ? | Lets give them a chance this coming season. Like Mr. Tucker, I the principal of the high school at Leland, gave his boys. It pays to be prepared. A. J. Sam West Is At Home On Furlough And Had Unusual Fishing Experi ence At Town Creek Re 1 cently I In the army nine years but I still not having had enough to quit, 1st Sgt. Sam West is now ; spending a 90-day leave at his home at Leland. His last 36 months of service were spent in the Southwest Pacific. As he himself puts it, his only personal] memeto of the war is a burn on! his right side, made by a passing I machine gun bullet. I More interesting to him now than the war has been is the opportunity to go freshwater fishing. In this relation he was casting with a plug in Town Creek one day this week. He got a normal strike from a 2-pound trout and reeled it in with normal operations. His surprise came he found the legs of a sparrow stick ing out of the mouth of the trout. The fish had evidently caught the sparrow while the bird was drinking, just a short time before. The bird was too large to go down its throat, and the backward extending feathers prevented it from being disgorg ed. In spite of having its throat full the trout had been eager for more. ? In addition to his nine years of service with the Army, Sgt. West is booked for still more. He rein listed promptly when his original discharge was due. His wife is Development Of Beach Is Sure Owner Of Gause Beach Property Cautious When Discussing Plans For Im mediate Future Of That Property t D. Stowe Crouse, Myrtle Beach real estate man who recently bought the Gause Beach property near Shallotte, was in Southport Monday and stated that while he had not yet formed definite plans for the development of Gause Beach, development was certain in time. It is understood that Mr. Crouse is also interested in property at Southport and that his trip here was to look into this matter. He is credited with being one of the largest real estate dealers in South Carolina. St. Julian Springs who with his brother was one of the most active figures in the development of Myrtle Beach into the huge resort that it now is, was here with Mr. Crouse. DISCONTINUED BUS The W. B. & S. bus running from Shallotte to the Shipyard in Wilmington was discontinued this week. Herman Phelps, who ha3 been driving this bus since it was first put on for the convenience of shipyard employees, has been transferred to the Whiteville Southport line. the former Miss Frances Ganey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dillon Ganey, of Leland. C. / believe in putting my store right in my customers home * The telephone is more than convenient communica tion. It is a means of doing business, a way for the merchant to put his store in his customers' homes. In serving business, the Telephone Company accepts a great responsibility ? the obligation to meet every need of the business man who depends on the telephone. With the Company ? as with the corner drug store ? earnings are vital to continued success. And because the telephone has become a part of every day life, telephone earnings are a subject of im portance to all. In 1945, telephone earnings were the lowest in the past 23 years. For 1946, the outlook is for even lower earnings. In keeping with the general trend throughout the country, wages have recently been increased. The cost of everything else going into the furnishing of telephone service is also climbing. Adequate earnings are a basic necessity to the American way of life. Earnings must be sufficient to enable industry to maintain high standards of service and to attract capital for expansion. As for the Telephone Company, they are indispensable if the full usefulness of the telephone in carrying on the business of the community is to be safeguarded. SOUTHERN BILL TELEPHONE AND ULEORAPH COMPANY Incorperof td Weed Planting To Begin Soon Mild Weather Has Resulted In Developing Tobacco Plants Unusually Early This Spring Unless there Is a decided change in the weather, tobacco planting in Brunswick county will be in full blast by the first of April, according to John W. Stanley, Waccamaw township to bacco grower who was in town yesterday. Numerous other tobacco grow ers have recently stated that to bacco plants were ten days earlier in growth than in any previous season. They are good sized and Mrs. Ida Clemmons supply, n. c. appear healthy. If the warm ' weather keeps up some indus- 1 ! trious "early bird" among the to : bacco growers will be putting plants in the field in another few days. ! With great activity in the to bacco fields just around the corner, farmers have been putt ing in some real work towards j preparing for and planting other crops. A great number of them have planted portions of their corn crop and have prepared the land for more. Gardens and win ter field crops are looking at their best and optism among the farmers is naturally high. ON VACATION Mrs. L. R.
