ably discharged from the Navy on

vice two years and eight months. [
He is now at home with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H.
Milligan, at Shallotte Point.
RELEASED FROM SERVICE
James A. White, SK 3-c, of
Leland, has been given an honor
able discharge from the Navy, !
after 28 months of service. Dur- !
ing this time he was on over
seas duty for 14 months and
won two battle stars, American
Theatre ribbon, Philippine Libera
tion, Asiatic Pacific and Victory
ribbons.
LUCK WITH CHICKS
Six weeks ago L. W. Clem
mons, of Southport, received 600
day old chicks from a hatchery.
The biddies were sent by mail
and a dozen of them died or were
killed in transit. The hatchery
replaced the lost birds and Mr.
Clemmons has not lost a chick
since the original and supple
mentary shipments arrived. The |
chickens now weight a pound to ]
a pound and a half.
The Romans cultivated many
varieties of apples.

Commander Garrett is now on
the U. S. S. Natoma Bay, a ship
that is being decommissioned in
the Norfolk Navy Yard, Norfolk,
Va., and expects to make a short
visit home before going back to
the West Coast to his family. He
expects to retire from - the Navy

there, was in a drunken condi
tion and that he frequently slap
ped his wife and struck her, even
after he was told she was dying.
A maid entering a room at
the Ewing home had found Ewing
asleep in a chair and his wife
lying on the floor in an uncon
scious condition. She was im
mediately removed to the hospi
tal, where she died three . hours
later. The autopsy revealed she
came to her death from a blow
on the head and internal injuries
in addition to some 30 bruises and
"burns" about the body.
