The State Port Pilot Southport, N. G. Published Every Wednesday JAMES M. HARPER, JR - Editor Entered' as second-class matter April 20, 1928, at the Post Office at Southport, N; C., under the Act of March 3, 1879. SUBSCRIPTION RATES ONE YEAR SIX MONTHS THREE MONTHS Wednesday, June 5, 1946 T emporary Measure ft was good newsr for local boatmen when wjord was received here last week that plans for placing Oak Is land Coast Guard Station in caretaker status was only a temporary measure, made necessary during the transition of that branch of the service from the Navy Department back to the Treasury Department. The good that has been done by Coast Guardsmen stationed at Oak Is land during time of peace is incalcul able, for- in addition to the actual res cue work involved, there has always been the friendly assurance felt by sea men as they passed across the bar that help was theirs for the asking. This feeling of security has made it possible for local shrimpers and fishermen to go out many a day when otherwise they would have to remained inside. Congressman Clark has . promised that he will do all in his power to see to it that Oak Island is quickly restored to its old strength, and in the mean time the best we can do is hope that a speedy transfer of records and person nel is made between these two depart ments of our National Government. Planning Board We had a talk with County Agent J. E. Dodson, and the conversation got around to the matter of long range $1.50 . 1.00 .75 - planning for the development of our section. Quite naturally, Mr. Dodson's pri mary interest is in fanning1 and its con tinued growth and improvement. But he is a man of vision, and wants to see the people of his home county en joy a well balanced program of pros perity. We discussed the various business factoid that should be considered in connection with the economic future of Brunswick county, and we agreed that the introduction of several small in dustries might be the best insurance we could have against this area ever re verting to its former classification as one of the poorer agricultural counties of North Carolina. This, of cdurse, is a time when you can sell almost any kind of service or commodity that you are able to de liver. What Mr. Dodson wants to see is the establishment of a sound, well balanced plan that will survive the current wave of prosperity and will still be working. when business gets down to earth once more. There are a good many citizens of county who might do well to consider a planned program of this kind. In fact, it just might be a good investment of their time to help work out the de tails. There isn't a citizen or a taxpay er who wouldn't profit by the general prosperity of this area. Saving Food There probably will be food collect ion campaigns conducted in our midst for the avowed purpose of helping avert starvation for the people of war devastated Europe; and if there are, we plan to cooperate. However, we do not believe that the biggest result of these campaigns will be expressed by the amount of food collected for shipment. Our donations will probably be just a drop in the bucket. But what will happen is this: We may have impressed upon our con sciousness the dire need of these who are starving, and may make some effort to use and waste less; and we will un doubtedly be conditioned as a people for putting up with the shortages that probably will result as more food sup plies are shipped to Europe. And that, we feel sure, is a good enough objective. Woman Walks Ten Thousand Miles Believe it or not a woman walks thousands of miles every year doing her ordinary house work. No wonder most women have foot trouble. Recently a local woman said that she could never seem to get her work done in, time to go out. She had aches and pains in every part of her body and her feet always hurt. Now after several foot massages with PED-EX she feels like a new woman. She claims her hus band has fallen in love with her again because she is always happy and smiling. No more tired, aching, burning feet or pains from corns and callouses to spoil her disposition. PED-EX is a combination of essential oils. Use It on your feet and find out what it means to be happy. PED-EX is sold by all drug stores here in Brunswick County in professional size only. ? Adv. 1 Rovin' Reporter (Continued from pace 1) hardest place to reach by car. " I I Maybe a copy of this paper is going to the right guy. Maybe it j isn't. During couH. week we wrote a robeipt for a yotriig man nam ed Cnfson, of Lock wood a Polly township. Right after that we 'went fishing with Judge John J. [Burney and lost the receipt book. I Near as we can remember the first name of the subscriber was Herman. All we remember about the fellow who paid is that his last name is Caison and Uiat he said he liked this column. Judge R. Hunt Parker writes us how much he enjoys fresh water fishing and states that while holding the recent term of court here he caught more fish than he ever before caught in freshwater. He had such a good time that he plans to come back on fishing trips. Southport and Brunswick coun ty gained two mighty fine citi zens in Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Kil patrick when Mr. Kilpatrick bought out the Harrell Funeral home and they moved to South port. Both Mr. and Mrs. Kil patrick are keenly interested in civic matters that pertain to the town and county. Saturday even ing Mr. Kilpatrick stopped in at the office just after we had re turned from Shallotte. Naturally, we told him of the fine thing that Shallotte people had done that day by raising a fund for Mrs. H. Jim Williamson. Despite | the; fact that we. were not ask-] ing for funds in this case, noth ing would do Mr. Kilpatrick but that he should write a check for $5.00 and give it to us to be added to the sum raised by the good Shallotte people.
