The State Port Pilot Southport, N. G. Published Every Wednesday JAMES M. HARPER, JR Editor Entered as second-rfass matter April 20, 1928, at the Post Office at Southport, N. C., under the Act of March 3. 1879. SUBSCRIPTION RATES ONE YEAR SIX MONTHS THREE MONTHS Wednesday, June 12, 1946 Caswell For Recreation From reliable sources we learn that the Department of Conservation and Development is in dead earnest about acquiring the Navy Section Rase at , Foil Caswell as an occupational park area. There may be some ways in which local citizens can assist with this trans fer of the government-owned property to state-ownership, and we suggest that it may be a good plan to lend whatever assistance we can. As we see it, one of the finest things to which this section can look forward is development of its recreational and tourist attractions. The State of North Carolina is extremely recreation-con- j scious now, and we shall be happy to see the Caswell project included as part of their over-all effort. Cliib Building Through the sponsorship of the Southport Lions Clab, the City of Southport has purchased from the Fed eral Works Agency the USO Club "" building .and furniture. It. is a fine thing that it has been possible to work out a plan which will permit the continued use by the citi zens of this community of this build ing, but the mere rriatter of its pur chase fails to settle all of the problems .$1.50 . 1.00 .75 involved. \ First of all, there is the matter of trp-kfpp ; and since fhe'Tion's Club is a non-profit organization that operates on a modest "budget, some plan for | | financing this service must be worked ; j out. Second, since it is the hope of all j I persons concerned that the building will be looked upon and will be used as a community center, there is also the matter of responsibility 011 the part of all citizens to see to it that neither the building nor* its contents are wantonly damaged. This building- can serve an important place in our community life for a long time to come, but it wiil require the interest and cooperation of all the citi zens and all of their organizations. Here's An Idea During the war you heard much about the walkie-talkie, a two-way radio telephone that rendered valuable service for on-the- scene communica tions during: battle. The Navy used a similar set called the T.B.Y. about which you have heard much less, but which was just as effective. One of the principal uses 1o which this equipment was put by the Navy was for ship-to-ship voice communica tions when in convoy. Because of the peculiarities of very high frequency, it was possible to use these sets even when enemy submarines were in the vicinity. But what we are getting around to is to suggest a very practical use for these sets which now are a part of the government's surplus property inven tory. We believe that it would be to the mutual advantage of the boatmen and the management ashore to be in con tact at regular intervals throughout the day when shrimping operations ave in progress. Operators of the shrimp hous es could keep a pretty close tally on what to expect in the way of produc tion, -and could make arrangements for the necessary help. And the boatmen, now at Oak Island Coast Guard Station is not manned for rescue activities, could send out a call for help in case of a break-down. The care and maintenance of T.B.Y. sets is relatively simple and inexpen sive, and the range is sufficient to cover the distance from South port to the shrimping grounds. STANDARD... ?
