GROWING GRAPES POPULAR CROP FOR BRUNSWICK (Continued FTom Pa?e One) which are black. Niswonger suggests that 4 one year-old bunch grapes be planted in the home garden, set 10 by 10 feet. Plant 2 muscadine grape vines about 20 feet apart. Prac tically all varieties of muscadines are sterile and there should be one male vine with one to eight varieties. In the first year's pruning. Nis wonger recommends that only o.ie shoot be allowed to grow and de velop into a trunk, taking off all other shoots. When pruning bunch grapes in later years, pruning consists of having two canes of the previous year's growth tied to each of two wires, one running each way from the trunk, or 4 new canes, bearing 8 to 10 buds each. The new canes snould be selected from starting nearest the trunk. Fruiting canes of the previous season's growth between the selected canes and trunk should be cut back to 2 buds. The training of the muscadine grape on the arbcr consists ir. developing 8 arms radiating to the top of the trunk on each of the wires crossing the center post. The unit of pruning is an arm of 1 to 8 years old, supporting sev eral spurs with 4 buds each. (Continued from page one) Following the death of the late president hi9 personal staff was naturally disbanded. In stead of going back to the Pull man people or the shipyards. Jake assigned himself to the easier jofr of cook aboard the 77-foot Argo, a yacht owned by E L. Willis, of Columbia, g. C. He has been there pr&e tically all of the time since the late president died. Mr. Willi# keeps the Argo moored in Lockwoode Folly River, ju*t below the highway bridge, dur ing the greater part of the year. The president's former cook may therefore be regarded as a full fledged resident of Brunswick county. Captain John B. Norrls a Brunswick county man, is skip per of the Argo and lives aboard her. He and Jacob constitue the ship's entire crew while the vessel is moored at Supply. The owner's family consists of only Mr. Willis and his wife. They very seldom use the vessel and then only .'or short periods. Jacob and Captain John have a fairly easy time of keeping the 77-foot craft. Jacob says that his wan derings and experiences are over and that he plans to stay with Mr. Willis and Captain John for the rest of his life. ?
