How You Can Help
Your Beer Retailer
Most beer dealers are anxious to cooperate
with the brewing industry in its program of
Self-Regulation. They know it is good busi
ness to keep their places clean and whole
some, and to operate within the law.
Most of the occasional violations of the law
occur at the instance of the customer. This
Committee urges you not to request special
favors involving a violation.
Patronize places that always operate in the
public interest. Commend those who are
noticeably careful about law observance.
Compliment the man who operates a clean,
orderly place.
It is the purpose of this Committee to cooper
ate with law enforcement authorities to weed
out the few who flout the law, Aid to keep the
sale of beer on as high a plane as that of any
other commodity.

like questioning a witness in

any incident that may have news

We had lunch Sunday with
Commander W. R. Bomberger of
the Coast Guard. As waft the
case a few days previously when
we lunched with County , Agents j
Dobson of Brunswick and Galpln1
of New Hanover, Commander i
Bomberger had the advantage of
us. We could not hear him ask
the waiter to pass him the check.1
Since Brunswick county is now
poised for its big rat killing cam
paign, it was interesting to learn j
from the State Magazine, which
learned from Roger Murdoch of
State College Extension Service,
something about how fast rats can
increase in a short time. Mr.
Murdoch says that if there were
only two rats in a town and if
they were allowed to remain un-i
hindered, in three years time their
offspring would exceed three j
hundred and fifty thousand rats. !

over the court fcooks each week
in this county. It is true enough
that a considerable number of ar
rests are made for speeding. Very
few of these arrests result in
fines exceeding $15.00, especially
in the case of tourists. The State
Highway Patrolmen are supposed
to enforce the law. If they catch
a motorist speeding they can do

nothing but cite them for trial.
They do not try them or fix the
amount of the fine. As a matter
of fact, our opinion is that the
patrolmen lean the other way out
of consideration for the tourists.
If they arrested every one they

Although the family moved
from Southport ?half a dozen years
ago, when the Rev. R. S. Harri
son was transferred by the Meth
odist Conference to another
church, he and his family still
like to keep up with things in
Southport and Brunswick county.
A letter received from him this
week from Fayetteville, where he
is now stationed, said that The
State Port Pilot helped them to
keep up with things.
W. C. Mull, of the Standard
Hosiery Mill at Burlington, while
sending his renewal to the paper
this week, took time to ask why
we do not publish a weekly tide
table, showing the high and low
water periods at Southport, Lock
woods Folly River at Supply,
Town Creek at Highway 17
bridge, Shallotte River at Shal
lotte and on the Brunswick and
Cape Fear Rivers near Wilming
ton. Since the best fishing is
usually dependent on the high and
low tides, Mr. Mull seems to
have a really good idea for the
paper to follow.
From down at Lake City, S.
C., where he takes the paper, R. j
S. McClam wrote in this week to
ask if we were still getting
shrimp and saying he could sure
make use of some now. For the
information of this good sub- j
scriber and others, it may be
said that some days the boats get
some shrimp, and they are of
mighty good quality. Other days
they do not bring in anything
but fish. Things are more or less
dependent on the wea,ther.
Since he came here from (
Whiteville, we have had a suspi-1
cion that the Rev. L. D. Hayman,
of the Methodist church was:
something of an uplander?ten-j
derfoot to you?but he dropped!
around to the office Monday and
pridefully told us that he* was
a real old salt. Seerhs that the
brother of the preacher is Capt
ain of one of those big sea-goin'
tugs that ply along the ocean
lanes. The big boat put in at
Wilmington Sunday, and according
to the preacher himself, he visit
ed the boat and skipper. It seems
that the Skipper-brother allowed
the Preacher-brother ? to ride on
the bridge all the way down to
Southport.
Although they are getting only
a few hundred pounds, local
shrimp trawlers have been bring
ing in some of the largest Vir
ginia mullets, or whiting, that
have ever been caught here. Mon
day. night John Simmons, first
mate to one of his brothers,
dropped in at this office to re
port that they had got over a
hundred pounds of very large
headed shrimp. In addition to
these they made quite a catch
of the big Virginia mullets.

length upon the sworn duty of
members of the grand jury to
make presentments. "You come
from many widely separated com
munities of your county, and may
know of some crime which has
been allowed to go unreported
and unpunished. When you make
a report of this nature to this
body of grand inquest, you are
not sticking your neck out, you
are not interfering with the of
fice of the sheriff or his deputies,
but you are performing a serious
part of the duties which a mom
ent ago you gave your oath to
perform. You may do this with
out fear, because each of you has
been sworn to secrecy regarding
what transpires within the grand
jury room.
"Make no presentment from
hatred, malice or as a result of
ill-will. If any of these factors
govern your action toward any
person, regardless of race, color
or creed, then you are unfit to
sit and try your fellowman and
to pass upon the evidence you
hear."
Judge Nimocks then spoke of
trouble and strife throughout the
world, even in the very shadows
of the birthplace of Christ, and
marked that these have resulted
from feelings of animosity and
hatred.
He cautioned members of the
grand jury to weigh all testimony,
carefully, charging them that j
much lying is done by witnesses.
"Where you find evidence that ^
this is being done," he advised,
"notify the solicitor; for this per-1
jury and will not be tolerated by
this court, either in your hearings !
nor from the witness stand here j
in the court room."
Judge Nimocks urged members'
of the grand jury not to be hasty|
or careless in their investigation |
of county offices, of records and j
of public institutions. "It will be I
better for you to make no in-1
vestigation at all than to give
your stamp of approval to a con
dition within your county govern
ment which should not exist."
Particularly did he stress the
importance of making sure that
inmates of the county home are
well cared for. He pointed out
that none of these people are at
the county home from choice and
declared that it is the public duty
to see that in their last days they
are well fed, well clothed and are
made comfortable.
