This year should see Brunswick inty people having the best tsh water fishing that they ire had in many years. We pear to be approaching the end a several year period of ex ssive rains. Those rains, keep [ the water In the ponds and teams higher than normal, have ibled the fish to spawn and w without serious molestation. same high waters have en ted them to obtain a continu s supply of food. The waters f now not only well stocked, ' fish should be large and fat s spring and summer. If there no more than normal rainfall e fishing will be wonderful. about fishing a few ys ago, I1. ?>. (Pearl) Formy "?1, vf Froeland, said that ere were no carp in the Wac Es?r river prior to ten years !r At least he had never heard ' them previous to that time. there are more than enough, fact there are too many. Folks ? know the reputation of the iccamaw river for fine game h are not enthusiastic about Mtg its waters overrun by ro. pe have often thought that if we could get all of the Hewett's in Brunswick county together at one plaJe and time our subscrip tion list would half double. Last Wednesday there were only three out-of-town Hewett's In Southport and all three of them subscribed. Smith's may be thicker in some counties, but it is the Hewett's that predominate in Brunswick. ^ Early Wednesday morning, with prospects of court finishing up by; noon. Judge Q. K. Nimocks stop-j ped to ask about going fishing that afternoon. The prospects were not good; there was too much wind. At noon there was still too much wind and the last thing the judge said to us before leaving for home was, "I will be back in May." We have never i tried him out fishing, but any guy who can sit through a ses sion of court usually does pretty well waiting for the fish to bit. j R. A. Maultsby of Bolivia was' our No. 1 helpful boy last week.! He was on the jury and before i and after court, as well as dur-| ing times when the jury had nothing to do, Mr. Maultsby made It a point of inquiring of folks whom he met if they were sub- j scribers to The State Port Pilot, j When he would find one who was| not he would preach him a serm on and then bring- him around to us for the final converting. At least one of the boys at the University of North Caro lina has his summer course all j mapped out and chartered. Hal-, stead Holden, of Shallotte and j Holden's Beach, is to go on a cruise of two months to Pearl | Harbor and other points out j there. He will be aboard an air craft carrier with the rating of Midshipman. At the University Halstead is a member of the track team and is majoring in several subjects. For once spring oats and small grain seem to be doing well. As| a rule, Brunswick farmers have J always gotten better results by planting in the fall. Last fall they could not plant because of the continued rains. As a result a great deal of grain was planted in late January and February. According to reports and fields that have been seen the spring j planted crop is just as good as the winter. Rice Gwynn, Wacca-1 maw township planter and busi ness man. stated this week that i he had 230 acres in grain of various sorts and it was all look ing well. Butler, North West town ship man is probably one of the charter subscribers to this paper and whA has stood by it ever since. He volunteered the inform ation that living out beyond Phoenix and in the most north ern tip of the county we should come up there and see him. He thinks his section of the county I has had more mud than any J other this past winter. He may be right, but from the terrific amount of complaining we have j had from elsewhere, the North west roads are hardly in a class by themselves. The runs of herring are said to be coming on strong at Town I Creek now. Some fine catches are being made. The law allows fishing with ' registered nets Thursdays, Fridays and Satur day nights. Recently it was in advertently stated that the nets had to be out at midnight each night. This should have been at midnight on Saturday night. Ac cording to Game Protector H. T. Y? truck farms must be pretty well ad vanced for the time of the year.] George Linders, who operates a | big truck farm up there and is j growing his plants on the river1 road between Southport and Wil-' mington, took up his first truck load of lettuce, cabbage and some other plants last week. This week the plants for his farm are really going to town. This year the Long Island man is growing his plants for 40 acres in truck crops four miles from Southport. A lot of interesting things happen throughout Brunswick county with only a small num ber of people hearing about them. | Adding to its thick coverage of1 Brunswick county, hundreds of people who own beach or other property in the county and live elsewhere are regular readers of this paper. Every little story has a lot of interested readers and they make good publicity for your county and community. When you hear of something in teresting we will appreciate it if you will pass it on to us. If the matter is interesting enough, and it may be that without your knowing it. it will also be pass ed on to the daily papers. This week we had a letter from the editor of one of the largest dally papers in the state, saying that if we had any feature stories or news matter, he wished we would pass it on to them. Recently adopted bus schedules leave us in a bit of a fix about getting home from Shallotte and other points in the county in the late afternoons. If we leave Shal lotte on the five o'clock Grey-j hound we get to Supply 15 min utes after the W. B. & S. has1 left there for Southport. Things are helped somewhat by some friends of ours picking us up and bringing us to Supply in time to catch the bus. If they are too late for that some other friend usually comes along and brings us on home. Saturday Gapt. J. M. Parker came along, enroute home from Georgetown. We didn't have to raise a thumb. We arrived at Supply a full hour ahead ? of' the bus and had hardly got out of the Skipper's car'be fore Mrs. J. L. Stone, of Shal lotte, came along, picked us up and brought her the rest of the way. Even to a fellow who seldom notices anything, it is obvious that a wonderful development has taken place at Long Beach during the past few years. Over there this past week for the first time in several months, the development appeared so marked that some inquiries were institut ed. It appears from the Bruns wick county tax books that the tax valuation of the property at the beach was only $20,465.00 in 1939. Last year, eight years later, the same tax books showed that taxes were being paid on $386,518.00 worth of property. Here's the payoff: We believe that if the State Highway Com mission will take over the three or four miles of road built by the beach property owners last year, Long Beach will assess a million [dollars in property valuation two years from now. The folks out there are out on a springboard for real development and the im j mediate improvement of the road is the outstanding need. WANT ADS D. J. SMITH Real Estate FOR SALE 2 Lots on Long Beach.
