From a onal standpoint the water n growing is very pleasing, the time those melons begin ling we will know the loca of the biggest ones better anybody else in the county. was planned to publish a of all the young people who t on the tour of Clarendon the Pleasant Oaks Plantat last week. There were a lot folks arriving both early and late. Summing up showed com plete lists of teachers and stu dents from only two of the schools, Shallotte and Leland. The other schools were represent ed just as well, but with no list of names of all from all five schools available here in the of fice it was decided against pub lishing anything like an incom plete roll call. To our mind, about the pret tiest thing we saw last week was the great level fields of wheat on the Pleasant Oaks Plantation. There is no guessing how many acres there are, but spreading out | on both sides of the road and j viewed through the white pannel ed fences, that wheat, pushing up I towards two feet in height and just about ready to break into head, was a pretty and interest ing sight. We noted 10 of the Leland ? teachers, all of them married, on ; the plantation tour Friday. At | the same time there was 8 of !the Shallotte teachers there and only one was married. Believe it | or not, we honestly tried to de vote as much attention to one party as the other. The Leland | teachers present were, Mr. and j Mrs. Holland Manning, Mrs. Mary Bryant. Mrs. Blanche Long, Mrs. Ethellyn Forbes, Mrs. Madge Smith, Mrs. Mammie McFarland, Mrs. Mattie Wilson, Mrs. Mar garet Biggs, Mrs. Meader Neilson. From Shallotte the teachers were. Miss Madge Wood, Miss Mildred Spittle, Miss Carrie Lee Ward, Miss Shirley Jean Smith, Miss Vernie Hewett, Miss Sarah Smith, i Miss Gladys Roebuck and Mrs. | Louise Kahlage. Although we had a season I ticket we were unable to attend the azalea show in Wilmington last week. We have to look at the matter from the position we had on the side lines. Our impres sion Is that Hugh Morton, presi dent of the affair, and his work ers, put on the most interesting event that Wilmington has ever had. For the overwhelming suc ! cess that the azalea show turn jed out to be, Hugh Morton de ; serves to be rated the No. I man ,of New Hpnover and Southeast ern Carolina during; the past' year. Although we ftad not se%n each [other since 1919, when he left j Whiteville before we did, Henry, C. Hickman of Wilmington left I his seat in a Greyhound bus j Monday to come over, shake hands and sit down witn us. He j | is route agent for Railway Ex-1 press Agency and is now station-1 ed in Wilmington. His father, the! late Bill Hickman, for many years I treasurer of Columbus county, j I was a native of Brunswick coun- i ty. With the taking over of Fort ] Caswell as part of the Mountain- j 1 Seashore Park system, two places on the North Carolina coast will l stand out strikingly as points of j .interest to the tourist, Fort Ma | con above Morehead City and ! Fort Caswell at Southport. From a purely North Carolina stand point things are about equal for the two places. Better highway 1 systems reach to and around Fort Macon: on the other hand, maps ! chartered for us a few years ago by the State Highway Commis sion show that two-thirds of the North Carolina population live I nearer to Caswell. As an adjunct to his business J at Bolivia Bill Kopp has. started ' merchandising on wheels and has ? established a regular route lead j ing out from Bolivia for a two ton truck. Constructing a special ] body with shelves on each side, ' he is able to carry a far more Icomplete line of goods than that which is found in the average ! small store. Early Danford is in | charge of the store on wheels and the procedure is to drive up to each house on the routes and invite the prospective customers up the steps and inside, where they can look over things and | buy what they want. j Starting the propogation of azaleas and camellias as a sort of hobby on his large lot near the Elmore Motor Company at Bolivia, J. A. Elmore has built i up a flower plant business that would probably amaze a lot of people if they knew its extent, i In addition to a thriving business at the nursery in Bolivia, Mr. Elmore has been hauling truck load after truck loa'd of azaleas to Wilmington and other points for delivery during recent weeks. With a sales place in Wilming ton he had an especially good business during the a2alea show last week. ! ,v VIS1TEI) HERE . Clerk of Count ami1 Mis. Edwin O.
