Paint Brush In
Use At Beach
Long Beach Residents Have
Gone In Extensively For
Painting And Fixing Up
Cottages This Month
A hurried trip to Long Beach
this week showed conclusively
that the folks over there have
become aware of the value of
the paint brush. They are mov
ing in rapidly and both profes
sional and amateur house paint
ers are swabbing away.
Among the houses now being
painted are those of Ed Baucom,
a year-round resident and store
operator; Mr. Burns of Golds
boro; B. G. French, Lumberton;
I. C. Jordan, real estate opera
tor of Crescent Beach, S. C., who
has his own cottage at Long
Beach; H. T. St. George, South
port; Solicitor Ertyle Carlyle,
Lumberton; R. F. Plaxco, South
port; Ed Stott, Spring Hope;
Jesse P. White, Oxford.
Folks who are now engaged in
building or finishing the building
of new homes, and incidently
painting them, are V. M. Clem
mons, Greensboro; J. C. Taylor,
Charlotte; J. A. DeVane, Fay
etteville; Robert Jenrette, Winns
boro, S. C.; Lacy T. Johnson,
Thomasville; Dr. W. Carey Hedg-J
peth, Lumberton; Bili Fetts, San
ford; Congressman C. B. Deane,
Rockingham.
When it comes to the folks
who are placing material or
otherwise making preparations to
build a long list could be com
piled. Likewise there is a siz
able list of folks moving in for
the summer, and this is a list
that will grow every day.

Average; 18 Per Cent
Above 1945
! More flue-cured tobacco was
produced throughout the world
last year than in any other 12
months in history, reports C.
Brice Ratchford, Extension farm
management specialist at State
I College.
I Quoting figures released re
cently by the Foreign Agricul

S. Department of Agriculture,
j Mr. Ratchford said the total 1947
'flue-cured crop reached 1,824,
j 000,000 pounds, exceeding the
previous record, set in 1946, by
,9,000,000 pounds.
i The 1947 production, he con
itinued, was 18 per cent greater
than the 1945 crop and 47 per
cent larger than the 1935-39
i average.
I Countries showing an increase
in 1947 production over the pi-e
nvious year were Italy, China,
j Southern Rhodesia, Australia,
| New Zealand, and the Union of
j South Africa. Countries showing
j a slight decrease were the Unit
led States, Canada. India, and
Brazil, the Canadian reduction
I having been caused by an early
frost.
Production in virtually all coun
tries in 1947 was considerably
higher than in 1945 and preced
ing years, Mr. Ratchford said.
Of the total crop of 1,824,000,
000 pounds, the United States
produced 1,331,346,000 pounds. Se
icond largest producer was China,
? followed by Canada, India, and
