Down at the Thompson dock
the other day, waiting to in

that was being gassed and spend

power the boat had. "Well," he
said, "she has two gas engines
that generate a total of 1200

here from Charleston we burned
up five hundred gallons of gas.
That would be about 4 gallons to
the mile. She has plenty of pow
| From Bill Sharpe's Raleigh of
i fice comes the information that
Bill, phoning from the mountains
where he has been this past week,
said to tell us to get all the mat
erial together relative to Fort
Caswell Park, ready for the an
nouncement. Sounds almost like
Fort Caswell will be Ft. Cas
well Park before long.
Leaving Holden's Beach, there
I was no other traffic at the
: moment. The Ferry moved out a
? few yards in the streams and the
engine was switched off. Our
companion got out of the car
joined the ferryman up forward
and the two gazod anxiously
down the waterway. Getting out
and joining them, presently we
] asked: "What are we waiting
for"? Said the ferryman: "Blake
| Thompson, High Point realter,
is about two miles down the wat
erway in an outboard boat. He is
coming up fast and we are wait
ing until he gets here because he
said he wanted to subscribe for
the State Port Pilot."
Principle Martin Freeman of
Waccamaw High school told us
this week that he wanted to
come up to Waccamaw on May

j put on a whopping good May Day

ef-Southport ferry talk, Carl
Sink, feature writer for the State
News Bureau, writes us: "Boy,
I it ain't all your idea. Last sum
' mer I sat on .the breakwater to
the other side of Southport, ate
sand in the picnic and got all
thrilled at the possibility of how
II could make two million dollars
if I had one million to start with
carrying: Carolina Beach vacati
onists on ferry boats rides to
Southport ana Bald Head." "I'd
certainly ride that ferry", said
Carl.
One of our qualifications is for
collecting: the details ,the essenti
als, the milk out of the coconut,
call it what you blame please.
The other day we were admiring
the' polished ash floors of John
Holden's new duplex house at
Holden's Beach. Old man Luther
Holden who once had his neck
broken and who completely re
covered from it when a black
widow spider bit him, told us
that the lumber for the floor was
grown on his farm and was cured
in his tobacco' barn, just like
they cure tobacco.
We have been somewhat dis
turbed as to how we were going'
to take J. A. Bridger of Bladen
b<?j'o fishing: this year. Likewise
Congressman C. B. Dean, when
ever his wife wants him to catch
a mess of bluegills, likewise A1
Di'kson of the Wilmington News;
Sam Ragan of the News & Ob
server and maybe, even Carl Goe
rch, E. D. Bishop, Wallace Wade,
J. L. VonGlahn and several oth
ers. Our trouble seems to be
smoothing: out. Saturday night
Bill Davis sold us a boat which
will set three and from which
not even Slim Kendall, editor of
the Greesboro Daily News, or
Charlie Farrell. Greensboro phot
ographer, could fall overboard. As
a matter of fact, we had a fish
ing trip with Mr. and Mrs. Ken
dall in mind when we bought the
boat. Slim may be tops at creat
ing prose with the aid of a type
writer, but his wife is a darn
sight better fishing companion
than he is.
Our compliments to Mr. and
Mrs. Tommy Garner for the well
directed efforts they are putting
I forth to beautify the pretty little
home they built in Southport the
'past winter. For the past three
weeks these young people, espe
cially the Missus, have been
I working diligently on the grounds
of the home. This week they sort
of capped their efforts by buy
ing and planting 85 large In
dian azalea bushes. A year- or so
frpm now and they will have a
beautiful rank of flowers each
^ spring.
Jimmie Woltz of Long Beach,
widely known tobacco auctioneer
I on the Fairmont market, seems
i to be havirtg trouble keeping a
home for* Mrs. Woltz and hiiji
self at the beach. Last. year he
built one of the largest and best
: appointed residences at Long
! Beach. Jimmie and the Missus
'"hadn't even moved in when Mr.
Wallace of Fayetteville came
along and offered such ari at
tractive price for the home that
they sold it to him. They moved
into this second home very re
cently and still more recently E.
M. Underwood of Sanford came
along and offered such a nice
price for the second home that
Jimmie only saved himself and
his wife from being left homeless
by agreeing to build Mr. Under
wood a house just like his, and
at once. In fact, he started
building yesterday.
We were writing subscription
receipts for Mrs. A. H. Cromer
jand Mrs. J. A. Woltz, of Long
Beach, Monday afternoon when
O. S. Bain, district manager for
the Southern Bell Telephone Com
pany, came along. The phone
man coming along at the moment
we were with the Long Beach
folks reminded us that Mrs. C.
B. Deane of Rockingham had
told us last summer that it
would be the worse for us if we
didn't do something to get phone
service at the beach. So we told
Bain about what the Congress
man's wife said and reminded
him he had better not get us
into trouble.
This week we had a note from
Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Yaskell, form
er Southport residents, now resid
ing in New Jersey. They enclqs
ed a check, made out to cash,
for the cemetery work funds.
[This check has been turned over
to Mrs. Helen Bragaw, who is
supervising the work. A lot of
work has been done on the ceme
tery and the end of it is not as
j near in sight as is the end of the
j funds. In case any of the folks
I who have relatives and friends
! buried in this cemetery have for
1 gotten to help in this work, this
is to remind them that donations
are still in order and are ap
preciated.
This week came a request for
300 folders in one lump to dis
tribute among folks interested in
Brunswick county. We haven't
got those folders. In fact, we
have been putting In our own
time and postage for two or
three years sending out some old
folders we had. The calls for
them are now coming faster than
ever, likewise letters that require
individual answers. All of this
takes much time and postage. We
don't mind putting in the time
for anything that may heip
Brunswick county, but we' cer
tainly see where some of the folks
might profitably get together and
arrange for some folders that
would be worth sending out.
Recent mention of a ferry
from Fort Fisher or Carolina
Beach to Southport is still at
tracting interest in Brunswick
county. In the past there has
been talk of a road and bridges
from Fort Fisher to Bald Head
island, but this talk has never
come from Brunswick county
people. Until they have roads
over which farmers can get their
products to market and send their
children to school, Brunswick
county folks never will agree to
seeing two or three million dol
lars of their road funds going to
bridging from New Hanover to
Bald Head. A ferry from Fort
Fisher to Southport and from
Southport to Bald Head island
would be a happy and profitable
solution to more easy access to
Bald Head and also to the north
ern l>art of New Hanover county.
Gabriel Brown, spry Shallotte
community colored man who has
already passed his 85th birthday,
was telling us this week that he
has been taking the State Port
Pilot since it was first started.
He banks on it as something that
has to visit his home every week.
He has to use glasses when read
ing, but goes about his other
chores independent of any sight
seeing or other aid. Mose Gallo
way, of Supply, is another Bruns
wick colored man who has al
ways been taking The Pilot.
Although we did not care as
much for the boys as for the
girls, we were sort of intrigued
by the bunch of fine young Uni
versity of North Carolina folks
that we met while they were un
der the charge of the Holden's
at Holdens Beach this week. They,
were Francis St. Claire, Clara
Johnson and Shirley Moore. The
boys are mentioned as an after
thought. They were, Clint Owen,
Bob Edwards and Bob Hurley.
Writing from his present ad
dress at 1479 Fillmore St., Den- j
ver, Colorado, Sgt. Clifton W. I
Clemmons. a sunny Brunswick ]
county boy, tells us of the satis-1
faction that he got during the j
winter when he would brush the J
snow off of his copy of the State
Port Pilot and read of the fine
weather we were having back at
home. He is a son of Mr. and
Mrs. H. L. Clemmons of Supply.
