CLUB TO MEET Members of the Southport Home Demonstration Club will meet Tuesday evening at 7:30 o'clock at the home of Mrs. E. H. Arrington. Leland Cagers Given Banquet The basket ball teams of Le land high school were honored recently at a banquet given in the school. The banquet room was decorated with blue and white streamers falling from the ceil ing. Centfer of interest was the placed in the middle of the table, championship basketball trophy, j flanked by arrangements of blue i and white flowers. Following the first course of | the dinner, Peggy Lewis, captain of the girls team, and Alonzo j Gainey, co-captain of the boys j team, expressed their thanks for the evening to their hostesses, Mrs.. H. O. Peterson, Mrs. Dick Sanders and Mrs. Allen Brinson. Mid way, now at Portsmouth for re pairs, came in this past week on a 72 hour leave to visit his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Davis. He will come in for a 20 days leave from the ship on May 21st. The Midway is one of the largest carriers owned by the Navy. Leland News ENJOY GAMES Each Tuesday night the Re creation Hall of the Woodburn Presbyterian church is the scene of some interesting activities for persons of all ages. Miss Martha Ann Blake is now recuperating at her home follow ing an appendectomy at James Walker Memorial Hospital. Little Joby Gainey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Gainey, is doing nicely following a fall in which she suffered a broken arm. Mr. and Mrs. Thurston Lewis have moved to Fairmont to make their home, where Mr. Lewis is connected with the Fair mont Plumbing and Heating Co. Patrolman and Mrs. J. C. Tay lor spent Thursday with relatives in Elizabethtown. Miss Hazel Peterson of Wil mington spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Peterson. J. L. Blake, who is affiliated with Armour Fertilizer Works, has been sent to Sandusky, Ohio, for several months. Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Rob bins of Newport News, Va. spent Tuesday with Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Robbins. Mrs. Irvin Clemmons is a pa tient at James Walker Memorial Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Belle and children of Charleston, S. C., visited Mrs. J. L. Blake Satur day. Young corn usually makes fine headway even in dry weather, and thus far the crop has seen very little rain. The peak of the work of trans planting tobacco plants has past, [it appears that this season is I one when no grower will be j troubled by a scarcity of plants. | Farmers who grow strawber j ries, and a considerable number j who handle this crop on a small j scale are said to have been hav | ing some excellent picking. The j production is good and the quality is said to be the best in several I years. The price is also excep tionally good. j Turning from field crops, Brunswick county farm women and many living in towns, are said to have some of the nicest gardens they have had in years.
