Brunswick, the big diamond
back rattlesnake captured in this
county two years ago and sent
to the State Museum, is doing

Norman . McCulloch, of Raleigh,
a member of the Bird Club, tells
us that he saw Brunswick kill
and eat a large rat last Wednes
day.
Representative-elect Thomas E.
Cooper of New Hanover county
stated this week that he intends
using every effort to interest the
State Highway Commission in
building another bridge across the
Cape Fear river at its narrowest
I point bolow Carolina Beach. That
would be somewhere in the
| location of the old Menhaden
Products company plant, about
seven miles above Southport.
Despite serious damage to to
bacco on a number of farms in
lower Shallotte and Waccamaw
townships, the general outlook of
the Brunswick county field crops
[ seems especially good. Through
jout nearly all of the county the
j rains that fell helped instead of
'hurt the tobasso crop. This ap
plies equally well to other crops.

ditions throughout the county
would place everything as look
ling good.
Stories sometimes keep going
round and round. Two years ago
we released a story about Ma-j
kotoka Lake and its fishing. The
story was published generally'
and brought many inquiries. Two
weeks ago t?ie same story was
picked up again and published in
| Outdoors. Since then we have
been wearing our fingers out
answering inquiries.
Pictures of Southport's Model
T 1922 fire truck and a story
about it will shortly appear In
the Ford News, publication of
the Ford Motor company. At
least that is our supposition as
we had to sign a release on the
picture and story we wrote about
the old truck last week.
Congratulations to Carl Goerch,
North Carolina's most valuable
known-your-own-state-man. Last
week he got out the 15th an
niversary edition of The State
Magazine and it was a gem of
purest ray among special edi
tions. Incidently, Carl published
his own picture in this issue, for
the first time. While he looks fine
when viewed face to face, we
looked on his printed mug and
felt reconciled to the fact that
he prints our picture ? and picks
on us every chance he gets. We
know now he was only having
a build-up against the time when
he had to print his own picture.
With school out, a lot of the
younger Southport boys are turn
ing to the waterfront for conflict
with the mullet sharks and stin
garees. This week Albert Dosher
and Bertram Burris, Jr., report
ed to us the catching of a 100
pound stingaree. They said they

"We had a big" crowd at the
beach Saturday night and an
even larger one Sunday. All the
folks over here are very much
pleased at the outlook for this
year and we are all working to
gether to make this a year of
real development at Long Beach."

tion of what he said was fine
advertising and fine publicity that
he has been receiving in this,
paper.
Shallotte Point and Holden
Beach both report fine crowds
this past week end and all
through the week. The fish are
now beginning to bite real good
and both places are rapidly be
ing discovered as wonderful spots
where vacations may be spent
and fishermen may fish. At both
Holden Bench and Shallotte
Point many new homes are under
construction.
Meeting up with A. D. What
ley, who was the one-man booster
for Howell's Point until a lot of
other people found out what a
delightful little place it was. we
found him tickled pink over the
fact that the state highway com
mission is constructing a road for
the folks down there. To be sure,
it is only a dirt road now. but
it goes to a mighty fine inside
fishing point and a lot of people
are using it.
Bob Bryson, of Greensboro and
Long Beach, has purchased him
self an army duck and stationed
it at Long Beach. Whenever the
fancy seizes him he drives out
j in the ocean to go fishing wher
ever he pleases. When he gets
back from such a trip he does
not have to worry about getting
his craft tied up securely. He
just drives it up to the house
and parks it like his neighbors
park their cars.
A few years ago Herman WU
letts left Brunswick county and
went to Burlington where he
'has evidently shown himself to
be a fine and dependable fellow.
He is one of the foremen in the
hosiery mill of Coy C. McCuiston.
who owns a home at Caswell
Beach and whose family is now
spending the summer here. The
other day Mr. McCuiston dropped
around to this office and sub
scribed for the paper for Herm
an. Incidently, as Mr. McCuiston
goes and comes between his
beach home and his hosiery mill
in Burlington, he asked us what
size socks we wore.
We had not seen our good
friend Dawson Jones for around j
two months. We had supposed he
was sticking around his home at
Woodburn and amusing himself
by keeping up with his fishing,
but even the best guessers some
times guess wrong. Dawson show
ed up here at the office Monday,
and when we asked him how the 1

fishing had been he ruefully ex
plained that he had not been fish-)
ing, that he had been ill in his
bed for most of the past two
months. If he had been telling us
something about fishing we cer
tainly would not have believed
