Students Enjoy Stay At Beach Kappa Sigma Group From State College At Long Beach This Week On House Party An interesting group of young people at Long Beach this week is Kappa Signa house party from State College. They are occupy-1 in the Danford Ocean View ap-1 partments. Many of these young folks have been coming over to Southport' daily and making friends among the folks here. Asked who com prised the party, which numbers about 40. they stated they could not remember the names of all, however, they listed the follow ing: W. J. Brooks. Several of the party, including what was said some of the best looking girls, elected to go fresh water fishing with W. B. Keziah yesterday afternoon. The others chartered the Idle-On of Skipper Hulan Watts and the Majo of Captain Victor Lance for deeper i fishing. Cafe Re-Opening Is Gala Affair Hundreds Of Guests Atten ded Open House at Popu-j lar Southport Waterfront1 Restaurant Friday Several hundred people gather- ( ed Friday night for the formal opening of Mack's Cafe. A fish and spaghetti supper with cold drinks and hot coffee was served free. About 300 persons registered1 in the guest book and this pro-1 bably failed to represent all who J were in the building and to whom supper was served. Many others did not enter the building, owing to its crowded condition. But even those who did not go in joined with those who did in singing praise of the attractive and up-to date dining room that Southport now ha9. Nearly every section of Bruns wich county was represented at the supper. Folks turned out strongly from some of the neigh boring towns and there was a good gathering from Long Beach and Holden Beach. Mack's Cafe, operated for sev eral years by its owner, G. W. McGlamery, has always had a fine* reputation for its food and gen eral management. Now, complete ly overhauled and with much new equipment ,it is in a position to render still greater service to the public in a most pleasing mann er. Mack also donated a couple of nice prizes in a drawing by his guests. In this drawing a beauti ful Silverton Clock Radio was drawn by Little Miss Marcia Ann Dilsaver, daughter of Floyd Dil saver. Officers Capture 1100-Gallon Still After watching it for three days in the hope of capturing the I operators who did not show up, j Chief of Police J. H. Coleman of i Shallotte and Deputy Sheriff Day ton McLamb raided and capture a large still near Suply Monday morning. The outfit was of copper and was of 1100-gallon capacity. A long with the still the officers i got 150 gallons of mash and 11'/? j gallons of whiskey. Chief Coleman said that the | operators had evidently been tip ped off to the fact that the out- j fit was being watched and they! were lying low. Birthday Party For V. L. Ward Man Who Regained His j Health In Brunswick En joys Birthday Party At Holden Beach Coming to Brunswick county ten years ago in very poor health V. L. Ward, originally of Gates county, celebrated his 73rd birth day at Holden Beach this week. Although he is Well fixed and does not need to work, Mr. Ward is able to and does work every day. This summer he is behind the counter at the J. & K. beach resort store at Holden Beach every day of the week. Frineds at the beach gave him a real birthday party with a real birthday cake and all of the trim mings. The 14 girls of Girls Scout Troop No. 9, who were having their regular summer outing at Holden Beach, took the lead In giving Mr. Ward the birthday party. When a reporter saw hinm Saturday Mr. Ward was looking on his party as a big event in his life, thanks to the friends he has in Brunswick and the Girls Scout Troop No. 9 of Wilming ton. v VISITING IN BOSTO.M Mrs. G. C. Hickman and her mother, Mrs. B. A. Robeson, of Winnebow, yeft Thursday for Boston, Mass., for a few weeks vacation while Mrs. Hickman is with her husband, who is a mem ber of the crew of the Coast Guard and serving on the cutter Mendota. FROM LEXINGTON Dr. and Mrs. Milton Black and daughters, Diane, Beryl and Bet ty, have moved from Lexington to their beutiful summer home at Long Beach. Mrs. Black and the young ladies will be there through September and Dr. Black will drive down each week-end. The familes of Joe Sink, James Swice good and Jimmle Mause, all of Lexington, are also at cottages at Long Beach. IN PENNSYLVANIA Misses Margaret Bellamy, Vir ginia and Ethelda Varnum, of Hol den Beach, have been spending two weeks in Pennsylvania with Mrs. Lucy Buttersaugh, sister of Virginia and Ethelda. They are returning today. ALLEN'S AT BEACH Dr. George Allen and family from Lumberton moved into their cottage at Holden Beach Satur day. Dr. Allen keeps a cabin cruiser at the beach. With his family at the beach he will com mute between his office and Hold en Beach each week-end. W. Pate. Girl Scouts Visit Gause Landing Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Culp and daughter, Miss Helen Sue Culp, of Salisbury, entertained the St. Paul Troop No. 1, girl scouts, from Salisbury, at the camp at Gause Landing last week.
