"We shipped a lot of water when the seas roiled over us and poured down our hatches. For two days we could not cook a thing. Could not even make hot coffee during that time. All of our food, bedding and clothes got soaking wet. We are drying things out now." However, excessive loads ^ of building material have dam-1 aged the road badly. "I hope the highway commis sion will rebuild that road this summer. I have just got to get material in and build two large new homes in the fall," said Mr. Woltz. "Then, too," foe continued. "Dr. W. G. Smith, of Thomasvllle, has four large building lots down our way. He has building blocks already there for the foundation, of two $10,000.00 homes and will build more than that if the road goes through this summer. "There is really no telling," he said, "just how must home build ing is awaiting the repairing of the road. You know, some 40 new homes have been constructed along this broken-up stretch of road within the last year and a half. They represent some of the finest homes on the entire beach. During his many visits to Southport Howell has painted and sold a great number of local scenes. Unlike many artists in their work Howell, in naming his pic tures, also identifies the location of the scenes. For example: "3 Fishermen, of Southport." This makes fine publicity, as his work is seen and admired by thous ands. During his last week here he got 60 sketches of local i scenes. The better part of these j will be transferred to canvas in Ihis studio. Miss Morris and Miss Hooks, during their longer stay, got a larger number of sketches. Like Howell's theirs were mostly fish ing scenes, showing the mending of nets, boats and workers about the fish houses. They will all re turn to Southporf for further work this year. Howell may re turn next week. BIG WEEK-END (Continued from page one) took up the time of a small per centage of the folks at the beach, however. All up and down the 11 mile strand that embraces Long Beach and Caswell Beach there were numerous bathers, while hundreds of other people were In their beds or on porches, enjoy ing the cooling breezes. With hot weather returning and with beautiful moonlight nights, this week is expected to exceed last week in the number of beach visitors. Both the Long Beach Pavilion anu the Seashore Grill are again staging dances' with good string bands for Sat urday night. MAYOR ERIKSEN Continued From Page One we can get at them we will have plenty," said Captain Eriksen. The upper coast with its vast expanse of sounds, where the menhaden boats do not operate, has been providing a sort of a re fuge during this unprecedented spring run of menhaden. Things are different at Southport. The J menhaden are outside along the coast in the regular fishing grounds. As a result the boats have been loading up continuous ly since operations first started. Inquiry of local fishermen does not reveal any indication of a slowing up in the production here. . One thing appears sure, despite the fact that commercial fisher men have not been able to get at them in some places, the North Carolina coast is having the greatest run of both sport and commercial fish to be seen in years.
