More Corn On Less Acreage Town Creek Farmer Is High ly Pleased With Results Of Experiment Conducted This Season With Com Crop Francis Skipper. Town Creek, had good experience in com growing this year, according to Jake Tinga of the Bolivia school. In past years Mr. Skipper has always planted and cultivated 10 aores in corn, that acreage be ing necessary on his farm for livestock, etc. This year, with no decrease in ?his? heeds, he planted only 5 acres in corn, using more fertilizers j than in previous years. He plant- \ ed closer in the rows, cult.rated it only twice with the ti-ctor 'cultivator. Just now harvesting j his crop, he finds he has more corn than he ever before grew. He says that it took less than half the work that it has been taking. He is very much sold on improved varieties of seed corn, { the use of more fertilizers and the improved methods of cultiva tion. 'blonde, was tired and hungry when taken into the rural home of George Rogers, 15 miles from | the point where her school bus I let her out on a roadside Wed j nesday. It was there that she j entered the car with the two ! men and drove off as school mates looked on. The sheriff's office announced (that Jerome Alford, 30, and Hugh I Smith, 22, farmers, were in an i undisclosed jail. 1 . I "I understand from the doc- [ ! tors that those fellows didn't i j bother her," said Deputy Sheriff j '? Later in the day, j j Mary and her parents went to | an infirmary at Florence for a j further examination of the child. Of the two under arrest, Deputy Rogers added. "They'd been drinking." In the widespread hunt across | the Carolinas the parents had j gone to their former home near | Tabor City, N. C., after receiving i reports that a car with two men and a child had been sight?d near the North Carolina boundry. Deputy Sheriff Sam Holden quoted the men under arrest as saying they "thought she was hungry." He said the men lured the child into their car with cake and bubble gum. There she re-i mained until her parents arriv-1 ed. Officers said the men and the child had driven about in Ma rion and Dillon counties the greater part of the night. Short-i ly after the girl was admitted1 to the farm home, Mullins of-1 ficers arrested Smith in his car here. Shortly afterward Alford was found walking along a Dtl- ( long county road. School children had given offi cers a description of the car. Smith, when arrested, told de- j putics that Alford had been with ; liim last night.
