PHONE 2-8175 S. L. Purvis Has Big G>ro Yield Winnahow Man Has One Plot Which Went Over Hundred Bushels Per Acre This Season To Lead County S. L. Purvis of Winnabow ap parently topped all other Bruns wick county corn growers in pro duction per acre this year. Plant ing N. C. 27 hybrid corn, Mr. Purvis made 98.5 bushels per acre. With the Dixie 17 variety he did even better, producing 105.3 bushels per acre. The slight difference in acre age production is -n'ot conclusive, according to County Agent A. S. Gnowles, of any superiority of one of these varieties over the other. N. C. 27 is a yellow grain corn and Dixie 17 white. Yellow corn is credited with , having slightly more food value than white. Mr. Purvis was not pitting variety against variety and it may have been possible that either variety received an edge on the land, fertilization or cultivation. Mr. Knowles states that ap parently a large number of other farmers came through with from 75 to 90 bushels of corn per acre. However, none of those he has checked, except Mr. Purvis, got in the 100 bushel per acre class. The agent says that a large number would have made this class if it had not been for adverse weather during the grow ing season. He, as well as the growers, are all very well satis fied with the results of the corn growing efforts this year. Crotolaria Is Good For Land This Crop Is Gaining Favor With Brunswick County Farmers As Means To Build Up Sandy Soil James Bellamy, one of the vet erans teachers at the Shallotte school, thinks that for rebuilding worn out sandy soils there is no crop that will equal crotolaria. This view is shared hy County Agent A. S. Knowles and about every Brunswick farmer wha has ever grown the crop. Asked why iso few farmers planted this crop as a soil build er, Mr. Knowles said, "I guess it is because it is a comparative ly new crop in Brunswick and because so few of our farmers know of its merits." Although crotolaria looks even more nutritious as a forage crop for cattle than either soy beans or pass, it is absolutely worthless for that purpose. Neither cattle nor hogs will eat it. In fact the crotalaria seed are poisonous. The entire value of the crop lies in its ability to restore wornout lands. Planted about May crotolaria produces a tough, flberous stalk, branching out in numerous limbs, all abundantly covered with leaves. The roots collect great quantities of nitrogen and the stalks and leaves provide humus. Where it is not intended to gather the seed the growth should be plowed under just before frost. Where the crop is more gener ally known cases have been re corded where a crop of crotolaria, sown on light sandy soils, has increased the yield of tobacco the following year from 650 to 1200 and even 1400 pounds per acre. The poorest sandy land will pro duce a luxuriant growth of the plant. This year Clarence Lennon, Supply, E. H. Sheppard and AMUZU THEATRE SOUTHPORT, N. C. Admission ? 14c and 30c Two Show* Nightly ? Mr. Lennon and Mr. Rackan planted theirs on very poor sandy soils for its restorative value. Mr. Sheppard planted his both for the fertilization value and to keep down obnoxious weeds and gass. In all three cases the plants grew as high as a man's head and so thick it was. practi cally impossible to walk through the fields. The only way to plow crotolaria under Is to disc and cross disc or by usin^ heavy tractor plows. Mules could not walk through the growth for any length of time without getting their legs and sides stripped of hair. Seed of the plant costs 20^ cents per pound and about 20 pounds of seed are re quired to sow a full acre in the same manner that one sows peas. Support Of Corn Price At $1.57 Loans And Purchase Agree ments Will Be Based Upon This Figure, According To PMA Chairman For Coun ty The price support rate for 1949 crop will be $1.57 in North Car olina, according to an announce ment by Elroy King, Chairman of the Brunswick County PMA committee. A national rate of $1.40 has been announced pre viously by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The 1949 loan and purchase rates are based up on 90 percent of the parity price of corn as of October 1, 1949, as is required by the controlling legisation. Parity for that was $1.55 on a national average. Under the 1949-crop program loans and purchase agreements will be available to farmers of Brunswick county and North Car olina from the time of harvest through March 31, 1950, and will mature on July 31, 1950. Under certain conditions North Carolina farmers may be able to deliver corn as early as May 1, 1950, at a small discount. Mr. King reminds farmers that in additiori to the corn loan and purchase program there is also a program which offers loans to farmers to build farm storage for housing corn under loan. Those loans amount to 85 percent of the cost of the structures, and. may be repaid over a period of five years at 4 percent interest. "Farmers of Brunswick county should investigate these offers of assistance before taking less than the support price for their corn", i Mr. King: stated. "These price supports have been set up for the farmer's benefit and we urge every farmer who need such help avail himself of it." Applications' for corn storage loan may be filed at the County PMA office. Growing turkey broiler* to supply fried turkey has develop ed as a farm specialty in the United States.
