"Owing to the fact that Bruns wick county is a farming and fishing area and has no large cities with industries, we have had a slow and difficult time trying to progress. However, un der your supervision, we have al ready seen a great change in our road development and main tenance. We earnestly ask that you consider salvaging the North East River Bridge for use at Holden Beach. "Again please accept our ap preciation, and may I say that for the first time in many years we do not now feel that we shall be the "stepchild and forgotten county" of North Carolina. "Sincerely Luther S. Holden." To the above Commissioner Clark replied under date of November 22, 1949: "Dear Mr. Holden: "Your kind letter of November 21st is very much appreciated by all of us in the Highway Com mission. In our recent conference a better understanding of your problem was reached. You may be assured that it is my desire to give more adequate service to the Holden Beach area, and I join with all of your citizens in looking forward to these improve ments. "Yours very truly A. W. CHRISTMAS MAIL Continued From Page One extra clerks and carriers, setting up new sorting tables, hauling out reserve mail sacks, and overhaul ing delivery trucks. Thousands of bright new postage stamps are on hand, and the post office pens are all getting new points. To keep Christmas mail on schedule, the Postmaster asks that you ? 1. Stop at the post office next week to purchase the extra stamp you're going to need, thus avoiding last-minute crowds. When buying stamps for Christ mas cards, bear in mind the de sirability of sending the cards as first class mail; also the fact that the rate for unsealed cards has been increased from 1% to 2c ?each. 2. Check and revise your Christ mas card address list this week end. Purchase your Christmas cards early and address and stamp them at once. Then stack them in a convenient place for mailing at the proper time. 3. Lay in adequate supplies of heavy cardboard, sturdy outer paper, strong cord, and printed Fourth Class labels for wrapping parcel post. Packages are limited to 70 pounds in weight, and must not measure more than 100 inch es in length and girth combined. Repeat the address inside the out er wrappings, in case they are damaged in transit. If you worry about the recipi ent peeking, the Postmaster ad vises pasting' "Do Not Open Un til Christmas" stickers on pack ages and the backs of greeting I card envelopes. REA MEMBERSHIP (Continued from pase one) for North Carolina: 1. Good road.<>: "The food we | eat is no better than the soil 1 out of which it grows and from j farm-to-market roads will come | better products for better living." | 2. Public schools: "Let's go for- i ward with this program in the I interest of the future citizens of j the State." 3. Completion of rural electri- j fication. 4. Rural telephone service: "You j may have a good road, a good J school and electric service, but j if you don't have ' a telephone, you are still isolated." The REA authority made it clear that he loked forward to the extension of telephone service on a scale comparable to the pro gress already made in rural electricfication. "We're in about the same con dition today with respect to tele phone service that we were in 11 or 12 years ago in rural electric service," he said. He em phasized that the public utility companies would be given an op portunity to supply the need for rural telephones, but said the machinery had been set up for telephone cooperatives. On a show of hands, approxi mately 80 per cent of the Bruns wick REA membership indicated that they would welcome tele- j phone service. i Price sounded a call for diver sification in farming in relating an account of his visit to a farm j home in the mountains where an electric line was being cut-in for ! the first time. There he found I milk cows, beef cattle, sheep, brood sows, cabbage, other farm produce, and burley tobacco. This was the kind of farm, the REA chairman asserted, which would always keep electricity. Depen dence on one or two crops could work otherwise, Price inferred. Characterizing the REA record as "a remarkable achievement, unparalleled by any other activity : | jo, .the public utility field," Re- j :presentative Carlyle lauded the ( farm people for their cooperative j movement. "This is grass-roots I democracy," he said. "You have demonstrated conclusively that j "here at home you have the skill, the initiative, and the known-how to develop and run successfully one of the most complicated things in modern life ? electricity." He eloquently defined democracy: "Basically democracy means the right to work for freedom. It means the opportunity to do things yourself without harming your neighbor. The highest form of democracy arises in coopera tion ? teamwork, working to gether." Carlyle, reminding that the rural telephone bill had passed the Congress, pledged himself to i aid in pushing forward the elec- j trie and telephone program until j it reaches the leaner territories. | Like Chairman Price, Carlyle saw the beauty in the new light which electricity has brought to j rural North Carolina, but he look ed ahead to the day when tele- i vision will be a new and greater j tool in the education of the peo ple for the better things of life. "Imagine what benefits tele vision could bring to the people of ; our state, after the equipment is i available at a price we can afford j to pay. We will be able to see and hear the most complicated as pects of our farming demon strated by agricultural specialists without leaving our homes." j The report of President John- j son called attention to several ' significant developments in the j Brunswick RE A. He reported that j 556 miles of distribution lines | have been built in the past year 1 and 2099 nef members have been i connected. The present membership, he re ported, is 5072.
