moved out in 10-wheelers to New
Jerfsey and Pennsylvania.
Making quite a success of grow
ing plants during the past three
years on a farm that he owns
near Southport, Mr. Sheppard
states that he could have started
planting a week or two ago with
out danger of loss of seed. How
ever, he has to plant with the
P view of not bringing his plants
to maturity before the New Jer
. sey climate will permit of their
• being put out in the fields up
there. Even a few extra days of
plant growth, before being pulled, j
can easily result in their becom
ing oversized and not so desirable.

i as they should have been.
The supposed freignter turned
: out to be a Yankee gunboat in
| disguise. This the three men did
j not r< ’ize until they had board
j ed and found themselves prison
j ers. Being civilians, they could
! rot be held as prisoners of war,
j but this fact did not faze the
I skipper of the gunboat.
| He asked his three luckless
: "guests” if they cared to swear
allegiance to the Stars and
Stripes and enlist in the Union
forces, promising them that if
they did not do that he would
shell the village. He was much
of a mind to shell it anyway.
Their wives and children were
living in the village, their homes
were there. They are said to
have begged that the Point be
spared, agreeing to enlist if this
was done. The tossing of a few
cannon balls into Shallotte Vil
lage Point was averted.
It was something over a year
later when the war ended. Cap
tain Bowen, Captain Puckett and
“Spivey” King were released and
allowed to return to their homes.
