Speaking of tlie banquet we would a’so like to thank Mr. .Shelton for the use 01 a juke box. ^Monday about noon someone saw a terrible smoke. We then discovered that it wras a forest 'Tire. AH the boys oveV' 18 went to help fight it. About 1 o’clock it was burning the ballfield, back of the lunch room, and near the teacherage and the old grammar grade building. All the students left the "old building. By the end of school the fire was under con trol, that'; is around the school, but it still had to burn to Shal lotte River. Tuesday the results were black and smoky air. Thursday the seniors left for Washington. Also five from the sophomore and junior classes went too. They included Marie Fulford, Rose Marie Gray, Joan Bennett. Carolyn Smith and Joseph Cart er. We would like to extend our congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hewett Mrs. Hewett was the ■•■former Miss Betty Neville, com mercial teacher at Shallotte. They were married January 13 and since that time have been keeping their marriage a secret until they could find a vacant house near the school. Kat Clemmons, and Mr. Reese getting caught in the rain at the gym. — Lois Pigott accidentally jumping off a ladder. Linwood Brown busy fighting fire. — Mrs. Carmicheal standing beside the teacherage holding a small hose during the fire. — The glee club going to Bolivia Thurs day night. — And Mark Gray, Jack Robinson. Scott Mc’Keithan, and Clarence Gray talking about baseball. Friday the eitgth grade played the ninth grade in baseball. The eighth grade won bv a score of 3 to 1. Be seeing you next week. G. any new time marks, the track teams of the University of North Carolina, all blit, made a clean sweep of the Camp Lejeune Mar ines at Lejeune Saturday after noon. Carolina gathered 113 points to 18 for Lejeune. The meet was of special local interest because Halstead Holden, son of Dr and Mrs. R. H. Hold en of Shallotte and Holden Beach, being on the Carolina track team. The young Brunswick man's spec iality is the 880 yard run. In this event he came in first with about 100 feet to spare between him and Captain Magill, also of Car olina. Magill, who had previously won in the mile event and whose speciality is the two miler, was well up in his second place posi tion ahead of Lejune’s third place ' man. Sixteen events marked the meet at Lejune. Carolina winning first in practically all of them. Among the interested spectators from Brunswick county were Dr. and Mrs. Holden, John Holden and Hobson Kirby of Shallotte and W. B. Keziah of Southport. It may be mentioned here that Hal stead also won the recent 880 yard event against Prinecton, a University that has a high name j in track activities. Two weeks ago 'Archie Thorn hill and Jerry Ball, both heading departments of the Standard Esso Oil Company in Charlotte, came to Southport and put on a show i to help the Southport Volunteer j Fire Department. They did a fine j service and went home personal ! ly pleased. Three days after Ball and , Thornhill were here Joe Rhyne came in with members of the Charlotte Photographic Society. They probably made a thousand | pictures and were very much | pleased. Friday night Jerry Ball came i in again, this time just to go i fishing with Captain James Arn | old. Motleys Building New Warehouse Rapid Progress Is Being Made On 72,000 Square F oot Tobacco Auction House In Eastern Part Of City Wor kmen are making rapid pro gress on the construction of the new 72,000 square-foot tobacco auction warehouse which is being erected by Blair and Latane Mot ley, veteran tobacconists on the Whiteville market. The structure is going up on a lot recently purchased by the Mot leys and is situated just north of Planters Warehouse No. 2. It covers a large portion of the block between East Clay and Webster Streets at Canal Street. The new warehouse is of frame and aluminum construction. The Motleys, who have operated the Brooks Warehouse for several years, will be owners and ope rators of the new house and will continue operation of the Brooks Warehouse. It is planned to have the chile ren appear at the Church School hour and also at the regular worship service. At the beginning of this con ference year the pastor, Rev. L. D. Hayman, and members of the board of stewards decided to de dicate each fifth Sunday for em phasis on the orphanage program in the church. A special offer ng will be taken Sunday and will go toward the support of the or phanage in Raleigh. This is an occasion of great in terest to the church and the com munity and local citizens will have a first hand opportunity to observe, and hear what is being done for the more than three hundred children in this orphan age. Until the decision was reached to install two-way radios it appeared that one Of the trucks and crew would have to remain at the beach all of this summer and fall, to quickly an swer calls of need.
