The tables were at tractively decorated in the five colors of the order with miniature candles and candlesticks as favors. M. Powell, Wilming ton, were the honored guests. STAUNTON, Va., June 3— Bess Miller Plaxco is one of 39 members of the graduating class at Mary Baldwin Colege who re ceived their degrees on Monday morning, June 5, The commence ment address was delivered by j Dr. C. Mildred Thompson, dean . emeritus of Vassar College, and now a member of the faculty of the University of Georgia. Dr. Frank Brown, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Dallas, Texas, delivered the bassalaureate sermon on Sunday. Miss Plaxco is a daughter of : Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Plaxco, j Southport. A sociology major and j named to the dean’s list for i academic achievement, Miss Plax co has been a member of the Music Club for four years, has been a member of the YWCA Cabinet and president of the Westminster Fellowship. In her junior year she was assistant editor of The Bluestocking, col lege yearbook. This year she has been a member of the dormitory advisory council. VISITING DAUGHTER Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Creech of Hickory are spending some time at Shalotte with their daughter, Mrs. Fred Mintz. Mr. Creech is a Professor at Lenolr-Rhyne colege. Russ Food Center Builds New Store Work has started on a now home for the Russ Pood Center at Shalotte .owned by Charles Russ. The building will be 40 x SO feet and will have a brick and plate glass front and stucco sides, one story in height. The Russ Food Center opened at Shallotte about four years ago and makes a specialty of fine groceries. Before starting In busi ness for himself Mr. Russ had been manager and one of the owners of the Coast Road for several years. Early Corn Now On The Market Early roasting- ear corn is now very plentiful. Following some mention of a field belonging to O. P. Bellamy in last weeks paper, Mrs. A. B. Willis stated Saturday that they were eating corn from her field. Various farmers are coming in this week with similar reports. Some farmers are laying by their regular field corn. This and other crops have made marked progress during the past two weeks. MADE GOOD CATCHES Despite the steady blow throughout. Sunday a number of sportsmen made nice catches of drum, flounder and speckled trout, fishing at Long Beach Sun day. Tops among the catches re ported was the 11-pound red drum pulled in by Jack Hughes of Southport.
