The field is now being seeded to an early variety of soybeans that will give summer cover on the land and another cash crop in the fall, plus soil improvement. --- Hospitals Open To Serve Veterans The Veterans' Administration has entered into an agreement with the Surgeon General of the Army, Navy and Public Health Service whereby all hospitals un AN APPEAL TO VOTERS I deeply appreciate the fine vote and support which I received as a Candidate for the Democratic Nom ination for Sheriff of Brunswick County in the First Primary. Shrimp Fleet Is Operating Here Boats Return To Southport Waters As Few Choice Shrimp Begin To Make Their Appearance With only one exception, a big boat belonging to Wiley Wells, all of the big Southport trawlers that went to <Key West and other Florida west coast points the first of the year are now back at Southport. Most of them fished at various east Florida and Georgia points as they came back. Rockville, and Georgetown, S. C., also got a share of attention in the return. The last of the boats to reach home was the W. S. Wells and Dallas Pigott fleets. The Lewis Hardee boats returned a month ago, Paul Fodale’s.and Swan-and Downing's, two weeks ago. So, far, the trawlers working here have only about made crews wages, but the boat production is slated to get heavier this week. The intuition of the boatmen that tells them where and when the shrimp will be is very seldom at fault. Picking Begins At Nearby Farm About 75 blueberry pickers started work Monday morning on the rarm of Keys and Graham, two miles from Southport. In ad dition to the pickers a small force is working in the packing house. T. P. Keys, Sr., said Sunday that the crop was good for bushes just coming into bearing. The estimates for this year are for about 2000 crates or flats. Next year a larger acreage will come into bearing and the bearing | bushes of this year will be larger and more productive. An additional acreage is plant ' ' -— --j"T ;d each year and after the 3rd .'ear they add up to the producing icreage. A great deal of money las been spent in the develop ment of the farm. One result is that the land is now worth about 30 times what it was when bought about six years ago. The farm has also been producing some very fine strawberries this year.
