Ruark Just as he had lived quietly and at peace with his neighbor for so many years here in Southport so did the end come Thursday evening to Joseph W. Ruark, one of Brunswick county’s out standing men. The full effect of their loss was slow to dawn, upon his fellow citizens, as they learned in disbelief of his passing; and while no man is indispensible, there were few who could visualize life in the com munity without him. There can be no doubt of the service rendered by a man upon whom so many honors had been showered by those who were associated with him in civic, frater nal, religious and political affairs. Varied Program On Sunday morning a young South American exchange student, Liaz Lessa, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, filled the pulpit at Southport Baptist church. Not only did this young man prove himself an able preacher, he served his country well during this brief experience as an ambas sador of good will. At the Sunday morning service at Trin ity Methodist church Miss Kate Gibson Widenhouse, whose summer home is at Long Beach, was guest soloist. At the evening hour in the same sanctuary Miss Helen Bryson, a visitor from Woodruff, S. C., was soloist. Thus we see that on Sunday three visi tors in our community contributed im measurably to the beauty and impressive ness of our church services. We are impressed that during the sum mer months few places are so richly bles sed in the matter of having men and wo men of ability available for guest appear ances of this nature. With the beaches and with the Baptist Assembly an in creasing number of distinguished guests will come to spend a portion of their sum mer vacation in our midst. Life in our community can be greatly enriched if we will take advantage of this unusual opportunity which is ours. Tobacco Outlook Announcement has been made that the Border Belt tobacco markets will open on Tuesday, August 1, which in view of the late crop now growing in Brunswick appears to be too early to suit most of our growers. It is a hard matter to place a dollar mark upon a shower, but when you talk about “million dollar rains” you must have reference to the kind of drought breaker that brought general relief to farms throughout Brunswick county the last of the week. In some sections too much damage al ready had been done, but for the most part the rains that fell put life back into the tobacco and gave coi’n a shot in the arm just at the time wken it was making the ear. To say that this is a funny growing sea son is to be guilty of a rank under state ment. We know one man who is cropping tobacco for the second time this week from one field and who has another patch that he has not yet laid by. Farming is like most other cross-sec tions of life. There are high spots and there are low spots, but sooner or later Mother Nature contrives to level most of them. And that is what will happen this sea son. When the markets open there will be a flood of tobacco on the opening warehouse floors; and the buyers will manage to stick around until the crop is sold, no matter how long it may take. Working with the Engineers for 29 years, the local man plans to retire after five years more. With Mrs. Dosher he will then return to Couthport and the cou ple will make their permanent home here. Anticipating his re tirement, they have already built a home on the beach road. Mrs. Dosher is the former Miss Evelyn Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Afton W. Smith. CHARACTERISTICS — One of the main reasons for the tarpon's unmatched beauty in action lies in the gleaming scales which shine as if made of polished silver. The sides shade into a copper-green cast along the ridge of the back. The last ray of the dorsal fin is greatly elongated and anglers call this the tarpon “plume.” An other characteristic that makes the tarpon an outstanding sport fish is the extremely boney mouth which makes it easy for the tar pon to throw the hook. This calls for extra skill on the part of the angler who must set the hook hard and keep a tight line throughout the battle. RANGE—While the Silver King Is known to extend its bound aries from Nova Scotia to Brazil, it rarely is caught anywhere ex cept in the tropical and semi tropical waters. The most famous tarpon fish ing grounds are the lower east and west coasts of Florida, the coasts of Louisiana and Texas in the Gulf, the waters adjacent I to trie canal Zone, the coasts of Mexico, and particularly the Panueo River from which many record-breakers have been taken. Tarpon evidently do not range fat at sea but prefer to follow the coast lines, usually in small schools. They ascend fresh water rivers and frequently are found above the brackish waters. Favored habitats are in the mouths of rivers, in passes, cuts, tidal bays, creeks and lagoons. SIZF—The world’s record tar pon, caught on rod and reel, is a 247-pound monarch taken by H. W. Sedgwick from the Panueo River, Mexico, on March 24, 1938. On August 6, 1912, com mercial fishermen netted a tarpon estimated at 350 pounds in Hills boro River Inlet, Florida. Al though not official and not caught on rod and reel, this is consider ed the largest on record. The average tarpon will run 60 to 90 pounds, but those taken well up in brackish waters and tidal rivers will average 5 to 15 pounds ,making them excellent casting or fly rod prospects. Last week there was tak of some of the boats of the Brunswick Navigation Company going north where fishing is reported to be much better, but Monday night they left in stead for Georgetown, S. C.
