Big Watermelon
Crop Coming In
Famous Walden Creek Mel
ons Now On Local Mar
ket With Prospects Good
Fcr F^emainder Of Season
The Walden Creek watermelons
are now moving' in, the start hav
ing been made last week about
8 days later than last year. This
late start was due to the cold in
early April, This cold killed the
plants when they were of good
size and just ready to begin send
ing out runners.
Replanting the whole fields na
turally resulted in the crop com
ing on much later than was ex
pected.
Here with his third truck load
Saturday, Robert McRackan stat
ted he had sixty acres in the crop
this year. His planting was done
during different periods in the
spring with the object of having
a supply of the melons ready for
gathering each day until early
fall.
Last year he had only 40 acres
in melons. This year with 60 acres
and the crop much better than
last year, folks at Southport and
nearby towns will have plenty of
melons each day. McRackan usu
ally delivers a big truck load to
Wilmington daily throughout the
summer.
The body of a typical adult
man contains a little over five
quarts of blood.
