Birthday Party Dale Southerland celebrated his 6 birthday last Tuesday with a party given in his honor by his mother, Mrs. Julian Southerland. Several games were played and refreshments of birthday cake, ice cream, lemonade and mints were served to the following young guests: Gary Clark, Roland Clark, Jr., Bill Furpless, Amy Furpless, Sally Tomlinson, Mary lin Aldridge, Ann Southerland, A1 Dosher and Derbie Daniel. Also present were Mrs. Jesse Dosher and Mrs. Roland Clark. The honoree received many use ful gifts. Observe Birthday On Sanday Mrs. Floyd Hick man honored her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Atkinson, who live with her, with a surprise birthday party. yheir children and their fam ilies and a few friends were pres ent for the occasion. Their ages are 81 and 82. Each family carried baskets and all spread dinner, together under the trees. The birthday cake was a lovely, four-tiered coconut cake, trimmed -with pink roses. Every one enjoyed a delicious dinner, after which the honorees opened their many lovely and useful gifts. Harborough Family Visit Southport Mr. and Mrs. Bob Harborough and their three children, present ly of Fort Bragg, where Mr. Harborough has been an Army Engineer working on the new 500-bed hospital, spent the week end here with Mrs. Frances | Young. | The family moved to Southport when construction work on Sunny Point first started. For nearly three years the family lived here and near the finish of the job Harborugh was transferred to Fort Bragg, where he has been for over a year. Following over four years here and at Fort Bragg, the family will leave soon for their native Oklahoma. Harborough plans to go into private business there. I -— VISITING HERE Mr. and Mrs. Toralph Tobiason of Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio, have been spending several days here with friends. Mr. Tobiason is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. K. Tobiason of Southport and was born and reared here. Since the death of his father a few years ago visits have not been so frequent. ANNOUNCE BIRTH | Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bellows of Washington, D. C., announce the birth of a daughter, Joanna Frances, Sunday, August 26. Mrs. Bellows is the former Miss Polly I Robinson of Southport. LIONS TO MEET " ! The regular meeting of the Southport Dions Club will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at 12:30 at the Community Building. Residence Burns At Yaupon Beach The new 3-bedroom home of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Davis of Yaupon Beach whs completely de stroyed by fire at about 7-o’clock Friday night. Davis, an employee of the Atlantic Coast Line at Sunny Point, had left with his family for their old home at Goldsboro earlier in the evening. Neighbors discovered the fire, broke in and made an effort to save some of the furniture. The Southport fire truck made a fast run when called by phone but by the time the truck arrived the whole building was in flames and little could be done. Brunswick Family Still With Scholes Here during all of the period of the Sunny Point railroad con struction and moving from here to another Scholes job upstate, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Austin and little daughter, Barbara, of Shal- j lotte and various other points, I are spending several days here in their trailer home. About September they will leave for Moultrie, Ga., where T. F. Scholes, Inc., has a 12 months railroad building job. Before go ing there they will spend a few days at Shallotte with Mrs. Aus tin’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Gore. Austin remarked that the Scholes Co. still has about as many railroad building jobs all over the United States as it had while they were working at Sun ny Point. That would mean about fifty jobs. They were working at half the States in the United States at the same time they were here. PERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. Olin Smith and Mrs. Harry Smith and grandson, Larry, of Waycross, Ga., visited Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Swan and other relatives here last week. WORKING ON PARK Cleaning out the lake and clear ing the park site at Yaupon Beach is now in program. The site is on the 500 acre tract re cently purchased from the Cas well Beach Corporation. Vance, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andy A. Vance of Supply, completed re ; cruit training at the Marine | Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Is land, S. C. Relatives and friends of many of the new Marines were on hand to witness the gradua tion ceremonies. The 12-week training schedule included drill, bayonet training, physical con ditioning, parades and ceremonies, and other military subjects. Three weeks were spent on the rifle range where the recruits fired the M-l rifle and received instruction in basic Marine infantry weap ons. After a 10-day graduation leave they report to Camp Le jeune for combat infantry train ing. The last of three summer Mid shipman training cruises was completed August 25 as 14 At lantic Fleet ships, with 1,000 NROTC Midshipmen aboard, re turned to Norfolk, Va., after six weeks in the Gulf of Mexico and the Carribbean. Participating in the training of the midshipmen aboard the escort vessel USS Coolbaugh was Otha M. Eudlum, boatswain’s mate second class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mancy Ludlum of Shallotte and husband of the former Miss Mary E. Grif fin of Brighton, Mass. Under the guidance of the ships’ crews, the middies received practical exper ience in the duties performed by seagoing officers. The vessels visited New Orleans and Panama and concluded their training with gunnery exercises at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. hospital check-up Mr. and Mrs. Reese Swan spent Saturday in Winston-Salem where Mi’s. Swan had a check up in the hospital. She was a patient there last year. JAIL SERVICES The Antioch Baptist Church, Rev. Luther Hawkins pastor, as sisted by the boys of the Royal Ambassador Club, conducted the services at the jail here Sunday afternoon. Pictured here is a scene from the famed musical production. Reserve Officers At Sunny Point Col. Wm. A. McAleer will be host to a group of reserve officers from Charleston, S. C., who will visit Sunny Point during the period from September 20-21. Col. Fish burne, commanding officer of one of the largest TC re serve units on the east coast, will be accompanied by about twenty members of his staff and they will spend their time being oriented by op posite members of Col. Mc Aleer’s command. This visit is part of SPAT’s plan to acquaint re serve elements with this new i ammunition loading terminal, and the Charleston contingent will be the first to profit by this orientation tour. Accomo dations for the officers in volved will be handled at the terminal. xOOD CATCH Shore fishermen at Ocean Isle 3each brought in a catch of 25, )00 pounds of nice mullets with :heir net Friday morning. The price was not so good, according :o reports. ON ACTIVE DUTY J. C. Bowman, a member of the Maval Reserve, is on a two weeks ictive duty. He is scheduled to return to his home at Southport the later part of this week. Little Boy Grows Big Watermelon A 56-pound watermellon grown by 6-year old Johnny Bellamy in his back yard at Yaupon Beach may be indicative of his future farming ability. There ax-e 23 more mellons, some almost as large, still on the same vine. Early the past spring Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Bellamy, parents of the lad, bought a medium sized n.ellon. Johnny, who entered school Monday as a first grader, took some of the seed and plant ed them. A result is the big me.’lon. Some old sweet potatoes were also planted in the back yard by the boy and now a perfect jungle of vine indicates a big crop be fore frost. One Man Injured In Holiday Wreck Pfc. Thomas Galloway of Fort Eustis, Va., is apparently the only highway casualty for Bruns wick during the long Labor Day week end. He received a bruised chest but no broken bones when the car in which he was riding went out of control and overturn ed on highway 130 at the inter section of the Midway road. The accident happened Saturday night and Galloway was still a patient at the Dosher Memorial Hospital yesterday morning. Corporal O. H. Lynch inves tigated the wreck and held Ken neth Simmons, also of Fort Eustis, on a charge of reckless driving. Simmons has since been released on a $300 bond. Sim mons alleged that he was coming out of the Midway road and did not see the highway and the turn. When he did see it he lost control and crashed across highway 130.
