Union School j News The North Carolina Association of New Farmers of America held its 21st Annual Convention in Greensboro, at A. & T. College June 2-5. The following boys from Union High Chapter attended: Winford Hewett and Rudolph Bel lamy, delegates, and Joseph Mitchel, 2nd vice president. Wil bert Smith and Rudolph received the Modern Farmers degree which is the highest honor given by the State Association. The con vention provided many rich ex periences and new acquaintances for the boys. All of the boys conducted themselves exceedingly well, which is a credit to our school and community. The S. B. Simmons Camp New Farmers of America, Hammocks Beach, Swansboro, opened its first week of camping June 8-12. Hulan Gore, James K. Bryant, Pearson Dubar, Jr., Sidney Fullwood, Cur tis Fullwood, Joseph Butler and William Robinson of the Union High Chapter were among the 109 boys and girls present with their advisors. Classes were taught in forestry, electricity, arts and crafts. Rec reational activities included bas ketball, volley ball, softball, checkers, horse shoe pitching, swimming, and boating. Extend Honors To Retiring Teacher Mrs. Hester Davis, member of Lincoln High School faculty, has j retired. She taught at Phoenix elementary school unit it was con solidated, then became one of Lin coln's teachers. She was honored at a luncheon given at Lincoln High School on Sunday, June 7. The purpose of the luncheon was explained by Mrs. Mary Robbins. Words of hon or from the P. T. A. were spoken by the president, Mrs. Thelma Beatty. She also presented Mrs. Davis with two orchids, one from the P. T. A. and one from one of her former students, Mrs. Mil dred Hall Taylor. O. Gore gave greeting from Brunswick County Unit of the N. C. T. A. and E. Gore brought greetings from the faculty mem bers of Lincoln High School. A. C. Caviness, principal of Brunswick County Training School, delivered the address and presented the honoree with a certificate of Merit coming from the Board of I Education of Brunswick County. George Beatty, chairman of the local committee of Lincoln High School, spoke words of praise for Davis on behalf of the commit tee. The principal and faculty mem bers of Lincoln High School hon ored Mrs. Davis with a gift, which was presented by the principal, James F. Clemmons. Francis of Southport attended the 65th Annual Commencement of the Agriculture and Technical College, Greensboro, on Monday, June 1. During this exercise they were conferred degrees in their respec tive teaching fields. Mr. Francis was the recipient of the Master of Science degree in Agricultural Education. Mrs. Francis received her Master of Science degree in Education. Mr. Francis is presently em ployed as teacher of vocational agriculture in District 1, Bruns wick County. Mrs. Francis is employed as seventh grade teacher in the Brunswick County Training School Southport. AGITATION FOR Continued From Page One are definitely in the English of that period, but the meaning is clear that provision was made for the establishment of ferry service from the Town of Bruns wick to a point across the Cape Fear river known as the Haul over. Just when the service was com menced, or how long it was con tinued, is not clear. Following is the text of the minutes ordering that ferry serv ice be provided: “At a Genl Court of Oyer & Terminer and Genl. Goale Deliv ery held for the sayd province at the Courthouse in Edenton begun on Tuesday the twenty eight day of March one thousand seven hundred and twenty seven and continued by adjournments to the fifth day of April following. “It being represented to this Court that it is highly necessary that a Ferry should be settled over Cape Fear River and that part of the province not being layd out into precincts. There fore it is by this Court order’d that the Ferry be kept for that river by Cornelius Harnett from the place design’d for a Towne on the West Side of the iver to a place called the Haulover And that he receive the sum of five Shill’s for a man & horse and half a Crown for each per son and that no person to keep any Ferry within ten miles of the sayd places.” Approximately 625 Columbus county youth, from 6 to 60, took part in 13th annual classes on swimming held at Lake Wacca maw last week Monday through Friday afternoons. It is sponsored jointly by the Columbus Red Cross and the Whiteville Civitan club. Approximately 300 youth regis tered before the swim started and another 325 registered after the start. The North Carolina Tree Farm committee added 30 new Tree Farms at a recent meeting here. I “This brings the total in North J Carolina to 259 Tree Farms cov ering 1,147,450 acres of well-man- j aged forest land growing trees for j tomorrow as well as the needs | of today,” said J.
