tal plants. At this time the plants
have passed through their suc
culent growth and the tissues
have begun to toughen some
what, which facilitates rooting.
The rooting medium is very im
portant. It should be free of dis
ease organisms, should hold mois
ture and at the same time pro
vide good drainage and aeration.
There are many mixtures that
may be used but perhaps the
simplest is equal parts, by vol
ume, of sand and peat moss. No.
7 silica sand is best, sometimes
referred to as plasterer’s sand.
A good rule of thumb to use in
determining the grade of sand is
that if most of the particles will
pass through a common window
screen, the sand is too fine for
a good rooting medium. Use
about six inches of the sand
peat mixture in a flat box or
cold frame.
The cuttings should be made
in the early morning and kept
moist in a damp cloth. Select cut
tings from three to five inches in
length and remove the bottom
leaves. With a trowel or heavy
kitchen knift, open rows and
place the cuttings in the medium
so that they will not be too
crowded. Press the medium to the
base of the cuttings and
thoroughly water.
Place the cuttings where they
will have sufficient light but not
in direct sunlight. The shade of
a tree is good or you can pro
vide shade with burlap. Keep
moist at all times but not too
wet. Protect from wind with plas
tic or burlap sides, or window
sash, depending upon the size
of your box or frame.
In addition to Motor Vehicle
Department personnel, the State
Wildlife Commission and State
Banking Commission also occupy
offices in the Motor Vehicle
Building in Raleigh.
