Cows Consume
Great Volumes
“Each year the stomach of a
1000 lb. cow giving 7,500 lbs. of
milk will have to handle the
equivalent of about 6 tons of No.
1 alfalfa hay”, said A. S. Knowles.
“In terms of silage, this would
be 15 to 18 tons. Of course, no
one feeds all hay or silage, but
this gives some idea of the
amount of fuel needed regardless
of the form. When thinking on an
individual cow basis, we must re
member that many of our cows
weigh over 1000 lbs. and are giv
ing much more than 7500 lbs of
milk, so there Is a bigger fire
burning in a bigger furnace. The
beef cow' needs fuel too.
“In stoking this cow's furnace,
roughages are still regarded as
the cheapest single source of fuel.
We always have the problem of
producing better roughage as
cheaply as possible,” said the
County Agricultural Agent.
“Now is the time to make pre
parations for seeding permanent
pastures. First thing, take a soil
sample to determine the amount
of lime to use and the amount
of fertilizer needed, ” he concluded.
