Tobacco Users Puffing Away Domestic use of both flue cured and burley tobacco is ex pected to rise in 1960-61 as a result of an increase in cigarette i consumption. This report comes from J. G. : Allgood, a farm management. specialist at North Carolina State College. Allgood also expects the in crease in consumption of tobacco to continue during the next three to five years for two primary reasons. First, the population! will increase. Secondly, more wo- ; men smokers are expected. Unfortunately for Tar Heel to bacco growers, the export picture does not look so bright. Exports of flue-cured in 1960-61 are ex pected to remain at about 1959 60 levels. Over the next three to five years, no substantial increase is anticipated in exports because of ti-ade barriers and the increased production of tobacco in foreign countries. Allgood reports that in 1959 60 domestic use of flue-cured was about four percent larger than in the two preceding years and the largest in six years. On the other hand, experts were five and one-half percent below the 1958-59 level and the smallest since 1952-53. Council, Durham newspaper publisher and State Chairman of the 1960-61 Christmas Seal Campaign, presents Dr. Stuart Willis, President of the North Carolina Tuberculosis Association, 1,000 one dollar bills raised in the campaign in exchange for 1,000 sheets of Christmas Seals. This thousand dollars will be added to over $24,000 of Christmas Seal funds that will be spent on TB research programs in North Carolina this year. For Research— TB Seal Sales Help Carl C. Council, Durham news paper publisher who is the 1960 61 Chairman of the North Caro lina Christmas Seal Campaign, last week presented Dr. Stuart Willis , President of the North Carolina Tuberculosis Association, 1,000 one dollar bills raised dur ing the campaign. Dr. Willis is well known in Southport and spends much of his vacation time in Brunswick county. His first wife was a native of Southport. In a symbolic exchange for the $1,000 Dr. Willis gave Council 1,000 sheets of Christmas Seals. The Christmas Seal is the 54 year old means of raising money to fight tuberculosis. Traditionally, North Carolinians have contribut ed $1 per sheet for Christmas Seals. Chairman Council said, “There is still time for those North Caro linians who haven’t done so to exchange their dollars for the ! Christmas Seals that were sent I them before Christmas. Over $24,000 of Christmas Seal funds were spent in North Carolina last year on research projects. When asked for what purposes 1,000 one dollar bills might be used in the research projects,, Dr. Willis stated, “The money might be used to buy a piece of vitally needed labortory equip ment. ft could purchase 200 to 300 guinea pigs and feed them for several weeks (guinea pigs are ossentail to the search for a TB vaccine!. A thousand dollars could furnish scientific consultation on a specific research problem or it could provide a training fellow ship to a yoting scientist •errter ing the field of tuberculosis re search.” Council pointed out that many people wait until after the first of the year to contribute to the Christmas Seal Campaign, and for that reason a gentle reminder will be sent in the near future to those who have not answered North Carolina’s recently in-1 augurated governor, Terry San ford, has proclaimed this week, Jan, 15-21, as North Carolina Symphorty Week. Sanford points odt the important role that the symphony continues to play in the musical educational progress of the Tarheel state. their Christmas Seal letter.
