BEN MCDONALD
To most people the phrase “to
fluff” means to dress up, but to
those in the media it has a far
different conotation, sort of like
ghost in the closet or crossing
under a ladder on Friday 13th.
Fluff to the linotyper, the radio
or TV announcer is the bad little
gremlin that pops up at the
wrong time and with almost std
istic joy sticks the wrong word
in the most unbelieveable places
that give a laugh to many but
causes agonizing embarassment to
the editors and announcers, and
frequently to the persons or
things involved in the fluff.
This was again brought for
cibly to mind the other night
when the word Su-Ann came out,
for some unknown reason, “flo
shoe ann”. And this isn’t an iso
lated case either for this report
er or the many other reporters,
Louis Kramm's

editors, or those much maligned
lineogtypers along the line.
I don't know what causes one
to fluff but I do know that the
word haunts every medium of
news.
Over the years there have been
some pips. In fact, onfe well
known magazine carries a feat
ure of fluffs and generally they
are good for a laugh. But the
other fellow’s laugh is the cul
prit’s medicine. The list of fluffs
is long, but to me some of the
most memoreble include the an
nouncer introducing the President
saying, “The President of the
United States, Hubert”, instead of
Herbert Hoover. Or the announcer
after reading the eomiCs and
thinking the microphone was off
saying,” Now I hope those brats
are happy”. This caused a Con
gressional investigation. And
the one that appeared in the pap
er reporting the marriage of a
well known personage on the
same day several boys were dro
wned near the church and the
wedding report read, “So and so
was married yesterday and his
screams could be heard for miles”.
And so it goes with fluffs, the
bug-a-boo of the news media.
Most of the time worth a chuckle,
but to the purpertrator, usually a
most unpleasant experience. Ple
ase, Mr. Gremlin, keep your cot
ton picking, ink-stained, mixing
up hands out of this column.
Oh, well, that’s the thirty
mark for this week.

The proper use of cut flowers !
makes attractive the interior of
any room and adds to the satis
faction of home life. However,
the satisfaction derived from the
use of flowers will depend upon
whether or not they are handled
properly to maintain blooms and
foliage over a long period of
time. A few suggestions will be
helpful.
Choose kinds and varieties that
have good keeping qualities. Im
merse the stems in cool, clean,
fresh water and place in a cool
dark room, overnight if possible.'
If not possible to hold this long,
treat for at least two or three
hours prior to arranging to give
turgor to stems.
Do not use soiled containers,
frogs, or wire. Dirty containers
will provide ideal conditions for
the growth of bacteria which
prevent proper absorption of wa
ter and turgor of stems. Change
the water daily and cut about
one fourth inch from the base of
each stem to induce maximum
lasting quality.
Remove all leaves that would
be under water, to prevent rapid
decay and fouling of water. Keep
the flowers in a place as cool as
possible. If kept in a warm room
during the day, place them in a
cool room at night. Keeping flow
ers out of drafts and full sun
light will cut down on transpira
tion and prevent wilting.
It is doubtful whether such
additives as aspirin do any good
and may reduce the container
life of the flowers. Some of the
prepared plant stimulants, such
as bloomlife, improve the keeping
qualities of most cut flowers and
their use is suggested.
Some plants, such as the poin
settia, secrete a milky substance
when the stems are cut. Such
stems should be seared with a
flame, or the base of the stem
may be dipped in hot water for
about a minute. They should not
be dipped in wax, as it sometimes
recommended.
If the principles outlined are
observed, your cut flowers should
remain attractive for a longer
period of enjoyment.
