Shallotte Athletes Honored
At 1961 Block “S” Banquet

claimed as Most Valuable Players
before the approximately 100 per
sons present, Friday night, as the
annual Block “S” Club Banquet
was held in honor of all Shallotte
High School athletes.

colors and other blending decor.

Jan IJewett, a top athlete of
the school and president of the
Block S Club, was master of
ceremonies. Leroy Mintz, agricul
ture instructor, gave the invoca
tion.

Dr. M. H_ Rourk later intro
duced Boone, who spoke on the
effect of athletics on the modem
world. Boone toid the group,
“America, is the only place in the
world where you can still do what
you want t a, when you want to,
where you want to. I'm sure the
persons I’ve j seen get awards here
tonight will j continue to win them
in life. All you have to do to go
as high as .you want to is to work
hard.”
“Athletics.” said the ECC men
tor, “have i many obligations to
mankind!” Using the recent space
flight of Astronaut Alan Shepard
as an example, Boone related,
“He was almost 40 years old.
Physical fitness in the U. S. is
at such an ebb nowadays until
our college; students in the 20s
are now considered on the down
grade, physically. Shepard’s feat
shows that it is up to the in
dividual as to physical fittness.”
Boone also gave other points on
how to succeed, athletically and
otherwise.

an end in 1959, a back in 1960.
Danny Stanley, who played the
outfield, pitched and caught, was

Is Liberalized
In January, 1961, more liberal
rules on earnings by social securi
ty beneficiaries went into ef
fect. The familiar $1200 figure
remains the same but there the
similarity ends. As before, earn
ings of $1200 or less will be
permitted without penalty. How
ever, under the new rules, for
each $2 earned from $1200 to
$1500, $1 of the beneficiary’s (or
his family’s) benefits will be
withheld. For over $1 of earnings
above $1500, $1 of benefits will
be withheld. Family benefits are
all payments to the beneficiary
and his family based on the bene
ficiary’s social security record.
There will still be no loss of
benefits in any month in which
neither wages of $100 are earned
nor substantial services in self
employment rendered. Also no
benefits will be withheld for any
month the beneficiary is age 72
or over.
The earnings of a dependent or
survivor of the beneficiary affect
only that person’s own benefits.
All wages and net earnings
from self-employment must be
included in computing earnings on
which to base deductions. Re
member, however, investment in
come, savings, and pensions are
not counted.

ed a pension by the Veterans Ad
ministration for non-service con
nected disabilities and have not
received their checks due March
1, should check to see if their
annual income questionnaires has
been sent in, Crawford L.. Rourk,
Brunswick County Veterans Serv
ice Officer, said this week.
The County Service Officer said
all veterans receiving a pension
for non-service connected dis
abilities are required by the Vet
erans Administration to report
their annual income at the close
of the calendar year. That if the
income report is not received,
their check will be stopped.
Rourk said that a report of in
come is not required of those
veterans and widows receiving
compensation for service-connect
ed disabilities or death.
