Game Protector Surveys Scene
David Gause, Brunswick County Game Protector, is shown here looking1 over the scene of death
and destruction on Battery Island following the recent hail storm. Hundreds of birds were killed or
crippled by the hail stones, and last week representatives of the State Wildlife Resources Commis
son were here to determine if there is danger of extermination for any of the rare species which
nest at this rookery loeated across the Cape Fear River from Southport. Note the bare branches
of the oak trees from which all foliage was stripped, and the bodies of dead birds lying in the
grass.— (Photo by Jack Dermid.)
Coast Guard Says—
Boating Safety Is
Important Subject
The Coast Guard with a
record of recreational boating ac
cidents and fatalities which al
ready overshadows that of last
year, looks forward to a busy
boating season this year.
A formidable record of 774
calls for assistance already under
their belt this year, the Fifth
Coast Guard District Headquarters
reports 26 “boating accidents” re
sulting in 23 fatalities within the
District since January 1st. The
number of accidents triples last
year's statistics for the same pe
riod ... a period when recreation
al boating is far from it’s peak.
From January 1, 1960, to the
middle of May there were only 8
reportable accidents and 18 re
sultant fatalities on the navigable
waters of the busy Fifth District.
This includes an area which en
compasses the states of Maryland,
North Carolina, Virginia, the Dis
trict of Columbia, and an area
at sea reaching 1000 miles east
of Bermuda.
According to a statistical re
port released this month by the
Coast Guard on recieational boat
ing in the entire United States
for the year 1960, the growing
problem of carelessness on the
nation’s waterways is apparent by
comparision of official figures in
previous years. In fiscal year 1960,
reports of outboard involved in
accidents in the United States
totaled 2186 resulting in 571
fatalities.
In 52 cases resulting in deaths
across the country last year there
is evidence of an insufficient num
ber or a complete absence of life
saving appliances.
In 119 cases, resulting in 174
deaths, according to the Coast
Guard’s nationwide report, it ap
pears that circumstances should
have dictated that lifepaekets be
worn before the casualty occurred.
The circumstances were: night
operations; deterioriating weather;
occupants ineapaciated due to age,
physical or mental conditions; and
entering areas of rough or other
wise dangerous waters, such as
crossing a bar.
In 13 cases resulting in 22
deaths in the United States there
was evidence that lifesaving ap
pliances were inaccessible.
Of 386 persons who died in the
m
nation’s waters, 333 did not have
a lifesaving appliance of any
kind.
Captain Joseph A. Bresnan,
Chief of Operations in the Fifth
Coast Guard District, commented
on another problem which the
Coast Guard faces here.
"We are finding ourselves in
creasingly plagued”, he said,
"with motorboat operators who
fail to figure out the duration
of their trips and end up with
insufficient fuel. Although, they
are eventually towed in, the craft
drift helplessly until aid reaches
them, exposing the occupants to
needless hazards."
Bresnan noted that the Coast
Guard and the Coast Guard Aux
iliary invite local boat owners and
operators to check with them now
for an outline of safety require
ments and equipment. "This small
measure of precaution," the Cap
tain said, "along with a boatload
of common sense could prevent|
them from becoming one of this
year’s watery statistics.”
North Carolina State’s baseball !
team gets a jump on its seven
Atlantic Coast Conference rivals
with a March 20 opening against i
Dartmouth. The next ACC team i
to open its 1961 schedule is
North Carolina on March 22, also
against Dartmouth. Wolfpack
coach Vic Sorrell starts his 16th
season as head coach at State
College.
If Southport and Brunswick i
county never amount to anything |
it will not be the fault of Clint
Bellamy nor will it be because he
has not tried a lot of different
things to bring about develop
ment.
The first time we knew Clint
he came to town to work in the
barbershop. He was new in the
trade, but he was good at it; and
before long we figured his chair
was a safe place to sir if we
wanted a good haircut.
But Clint was not too happy
with the confinement of the four
walls of a barbershop, and soon
he was out of there and engaged
in the pulpwood business. This
gave him plenty of the great out
doors, but little else, so it was
back to the barbershop for a time.
Came Hurricane Hazel, and one
of the results of the storm was
the Bellamy Construction Co.,
whose specialty was moving
houses—mostly beach cottages
back to their original foundations
from which they had been wash
ed by the force of the storm. One
thing led to another in this field,
and before long Clint was building
new beach homes—a contractor,
no less.
Without ever fully retiring from
this field, Clint got into the, real
[estate business, and in (he role of

a house for the buyer. He even
got into the business of building
and selling a few places on his
own.
Building was a natural lead to
the building supply business,
which he started at Yaupon Beach
and operated successfully for two
seasons before selling out to E. C.
Blake, meanwhile continuing his
contracting business.
A nice, new home in Southport
was next on his list of achieve
ments and represented his most
ambitious building project up to
that time. This is on a nlgn hill
in Deepwater Heights, overlooking
the Cape Fear River, and this is
where he and his family still live.
Last winter Clint figured that
there had been a lot of talk and
very little action on the business
of building a modern Ynotel at
Long Beach, so he purchased a
site fronting on the ocean at
Tranquil Harbour, and this week
he has a 16-room layout ready
for use.
. It is named the Loraine Hotel,
after his wife. She is the former
Loraine Hewett of Southport and
is one of the best and most \
manent projects that Clint \ :
ever undertaken. They have \V
children, Susan and Johnnie. \
they, too, are permanent impm\
ments. \
The motel is ready for use ail
already Clint has turned down ori\
offer to sell. Meanwhile, he is nod
letting- any grass grow under hia\
feet, for already underway atl
Yaupon Beach is a bowling alley.
As further evidence that he is 'S,
a man of many and varied inter
ests, Clint has dipped his toes
into political waters from time
to time. On one occasion he ran
Kirby Sullivan a close race for
the Democratic nomination for
Representative. Several years
later he sought the Democratic
nomination for Sheriff. He came
close in this race, too; and might
have made it save for the fact
that this is a four-year office,
and even Clint’s best friends do
not know what he will be doing
that far in the future.
On the credit side of his politi
cal ledger, however, the Mayor
of Yaupon Beach right now is
a man named Clinton Bellamy.
The football team won four in
a row to open its 1960 season,
but was upended, by Duke, 17-13.
The Wolfpack basketball squad
opened up with four straight
victories before bowing to Wake
Forest, 68-67, and the swimming
team lost to Southern Illinois,
58-37, after winning its first four
meets.
