PREHISTORIC CULTURES OF NORTH CAROLINA Native Flintheads Most farm boys and girls and sometimes their city cousins, have collections of arrowheads, stone axes, drills and scrapers that were left on North Carolina lands by Indians as long ago as 8000 B.C. Such collections are interesting and contains specimens of fine workmanship, but they could be of much greater interest to the collector if he would learn to classify his specimens as to their respective age, name and culture. C. DEALER No. 2405 was made in collaboration with Dr. Joffre Le. Coe of the Univer sity of North Carolina and is based on his classification in 1957. It shows some of the better known arrow and spear points of North Carolina. The time scale to the left in dicates approximately when each type of point was first made, along with the period in which each culture existed. It is interesting to note that the bow and arrow was not in troduced into North Carolina un til sometime near the birth of Christ. If you will notice on the chart, most of the arrowheads after that date are triangular in shape, being true arrowheads. All stone points before that date are spear points. When the bow and arrow came in at the start of the early woodland period, agricul ture and pottery making also be gan to flourish. Villages and ! towns became more permanent as j agriculture produced a more de pendable food supply. These and many related arti j facts are seen at the Museum of I Natural History at the North I Carolina Department of Agricul ture in Raleigh. Tobacco Yield Set New Record Yield of flue-cured tobacco, in North Carolina based on market receipts, during 1960, set a new high of 1.836 pounds per acre exceeding the previous record 1, 718-pound yield of 1958 by Ilf ; pounds. All types of the flue-currec crop contributed to the record. In the Middle and Old Belts Type 11 turned out an average yield ot 1,630 pounds as compared with a 1958 yield of 1,570 poimds. East ern Belt tobacco, Type 12, top ped all other state yields at 1, 980 pounds which was 155 pound; above the 1958 turnout. The next highest yield, 1,920 pounds ; was made in the Border Belt Type 13, for the largest type gair \(180 pounds) over the 1958 re j cord output. Production of North Caroline flue-cured tobacco in 1961 | amounted to 839,870,000 pounds ! or an increase of 19 percent oyei the 702,942,000 pounds produ'cec ; in 1959. The 1960 production waj the largest since 1956 when th< ' crop amounted to 961,495,001 ! pounds. Acres harvested, however i amounted to only 457,500 (i 1 thousand acres short of the 195! acreage) as compared with 579, 000 aert s harvested in 1956. Production of burley tobacco i) the State amounted to 18,430,001 pounds harvested from 9,500 acre for a yield of 1,940 pounds. L 1959 a record yield 2,060 pound was made on 9,800 acres w'hicl amounted to a production of 20, 188,000 pounds. Be Wise! Advertise POWELL'S Funeral Home SHALLOTTE, N.
