“What is meant by chlorosis
and how can this condition be 1
treated when occurring on azalea
j plants?”
I When azalea leaves lose their
i normal green color and become
i yellowish, they are spoken of as
] being chlorotic. Sometimes the yel
I lowing follows a rather definite
i pattern with the midrib and veins
; remaining green and other parts
! of the surface turning yellow.
This lack of normal leaf color
! develops as a result of a trace
i element deficiency and is not as
I sociated with a disease organism.
These trace element deficiencies
are becoming rather wide spread

NOWS THE TIME to save more truck
dollars on the more-for-yourdollar trucks!
jour zrucu aollars are worth a
whole lot more at your Chevrolet
dealer's right now! First off, you
get a head start on saving because
summer’s the saving season. Then,
with a harder working, easier
riding Chevy truck, you're set to
save every mile you haul. And,
finally, at trade-in time, you can
expect an extra dividend because
of Chevy's traditionally higher
resale value. What could be better?
Summer’s the season to get extra mile
age from your dollars on the trucks built
to give you extra miles of hauling. With
Independent Front Suspension, Chevrolet
trucks keep going thousands of miles
longer because far less destructive jar
and shake are transmitted through the
truck. Chevy I.F.S. trucks work harder,
too, in areas where other trucks have to
be pampered. And, with Chevy’s wide
choice of thrifty 6 and hardy V8 power,
you can tailor your truck exactly to your
job. So how can you miss—especially now
during the summer saving season?

in many crops and bring into |
focus the importance of proper I
nutrition.
The most common form of
chlorsis on azaleas is caused by
the lack of available iron brought
about by a soil reaction, pH,
which is too high or sweet. The
iron deficiency symptom is furth
er aggravated in soils which are
wet and poorly aerated.
For correction, the first and
most obvious step is to adjust the
soil reaction, or pH. by using
either aluminum sulphate or sul- !
fur. to a pH of about 5.0. A soil
test will be necessary in order to -
make this adjustment intelligent- i -
iy
Another method of correcting
the chlorotic condition is the use l
of iron chelate (Key-late). Che
lates are made from organic com
pounds and are considered to be
stable and water soluble. They are
effective sources of trace element
correction in plant nutrition. Mix
the iron chelate (Sequestrene)
with water according to instruc
tion on the container. The solution
can be sprayed on the plant or
sprinkled over the plants with a
watering can.
While iron chlorosis is the most i
common deficiency symptom on
azaleas in most soils, chlorosis
may also appear on plants grown
in clay soils due to a deficiency
of magnesium. This condition can
be corrected by spraying, or
sprinkling with one ounce of i
magnesium sulphate (Epson
salts i in 2 gallons of water.
In answering this question I do
not wish to cause confusion be
cause nematodes attacking the 1
root system may also cause a j
condition resembling iron defieien- i
cy chlorosis. In one case the ne- I
matode interferes with the absorp
j tion of ail nutrients while in the
! other case the soil reaction makes
the iron unavailable to the plant.

Baton Rouge has the country's tallest State Capitol. It's 34
stories qre most unique and reaches almost 500 feet up.
Huey P. Long was responsible for the erection of this uni
que and stately building as it was built during his admin
istration as Governor of the state. The building is some
thing of a personal monument to him, as he was assassi
nated in a marble-lined corridor of the building in 1935.
His grave is in a sunken garden on the Capitol grounds.
Over 52,000,000 people have visited the building, which
is a visit to remember. The old Capitol, with its winding
stairs and dome with panes of colored glass, is also open
to the public.
