Sometimes the yel I lowing follows a rather definite i pattern with the midrib and veins ; remaining green and other parts ! of the surface turning yellow. This lack of normal leaf color ! develops as a result of a trace i element deficiency and is not as I sociated with a disease organism. The most common form of chlorsis on azaleas is caused by the lack of available iron brought about by a soil reaction, pH, which is too high or sweet. The iron deficiency symptom is furth er aggravated in soils which are wet and poorly aerated. For correction, the first and most obvious step is to adjust the soil reaction, or pH. by using either aluminum sulphate or sul- ! fur. to a pH of about 5.0. A soil test will be necessary in order to - make this adjustment intelligent- i - iy Another method of correcting the chlorotic condition is the use l of iron chelate (Key-late). Che lates are made from organic com pounds and are considered to be stable and water soluble. They are effective sources of trace element correction in plant nutrition. Mix the iron chelate (Sequestrene) with water according to instruc tion on the container. The solution can be sprayed on the plant or sprinkled over the plants with a watering can. While iron chlorosis is the most i common deficiency symptom on azaleas in most soils, chlorosis may also appear on plants grown in clay soils due to a deficiency of magnesium. This condition can be corrected by spraying, or sprinkling with one ounce of i magnesium sulphate (Epson salts i in 2 gallons of water. In one case the ne- I matode interferes with the absorp j tion of ail nutrients while in the ! other case the soil reaction makes the iron unavailable to the plant.
