Enter Finals—■ Southport Wins One-Sided Game By FOXY HOWARD The Southport Sails exploded for 26 runs in six innings Sunday afternoon as they pounced on everything that Larry Edens, Emory Hewlett, Yank Mihal, Bud dy Tilden, Bert Chimmego and Ivan James could throw toward the plate. Every man on the Sails roster got in the game, got on base and batted in runs as they let loose all of the pent up frustration that they suffered last week when Jim Edens pitched a shut-out and Tom Smith fired a no-hitter in the double loss to Ogden that kept Southport from winning the reg ular season championship in the Cape Fear League. Sunday’s win moved the Sails into the finals of the League play off and they will meet South Wilmington in a best two-out-of three series for the championship, with the first game to be played c -MARINE SUPPUES BOATS — TRAILERS — ROPE GALVANIZED and CHROME MARINE FITTINGS and HARDWARE. —FAMOWOOD COMPOUND— MARINE PAINTS—BENSON ANCHORS RING BUOYS, BOAT COVERS, CONTROL METERS Glass Cloth, Liquid Glassing, Life Preservers and Cushions | —ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES— Wilmington Electrical Supply Co. New Hope Boy Captures Odd Animal; Mixed Rabbit, Cat By JIGGS POWERS Have you ever seen a “kit-bit”, or perhaps its a "rab-cat” ? Well, Michael Fluharty, 8-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Fluharty of the New Hope area, has caught one. The unusual animal appears to be half cat or kitten, the other half rabbit! Nothing like it has ever been seen in these parts be fore. Front-Cat, Rear-Rabbit The front portion of the animal is a perfect kitten, both in ap pearance and in action, while the rear half is just as much all rab bit. Actually, the transformation from feline to "wabbit” begins just behind the front legs of the 9-inch long, 5-inch tall animal which weighs about three pounds. The head of the cream-and black colored “kit-bit” has ears, eyes, and teeth like a member of the cat family. Too, its front feet and legs are like a cat's, with claws on the former like an old tom uses in fighting his battles. Diet Of Cat But, here the relationship to the cat family ceases to exist. Its rear feet are like those of the bunny, and its toenails are not the fighting kind, like those on the front feet. Too, the “kit-bit” hops with leverage from the rear feet, like a rabbit, doesn’t run like a cat when it moves. And, it will sit up on his hind feet and legs, like a rabbit. It has the soft, short, bunny tail, too. this Sunday afternoon at Ship yard Stadium in Wilmington. South Wilmington gained their play-off berth by virtue of a lop sided win over Ogden Sunday as Tom Smith could not find his regular season form. Doug Watts got four hits, a double and three singles, in the first three innings Sunday after noon as he led the Sails at bat in the 26 to 6 win. Red Best also broke loose at the plate as he got three singles for six times at bat and Bobby McKeithan, the win ning pitcher, came through with two doubles and a single for three trips to the plate to boost his bat ting average to .444. Others get ting more than one hit were Jerry Spencer with a double and a sin gle, and Joe Swain, Gene Russ | and Ronnie Hood with two singles each. HALF CAT AND HALF RABBIT ? The animal's diet, too, is cat like. Bread, milk, cookies, etc., like any pet cat loves, so does it like, not carrots, vegetables, etc. like a rabbit eats. Still its excrement is in the “pilly” form like that of a bunny. Two-In-One It seems that the “kit-bit” is actually two complete animals in one body, both externally and in ternally. According to its captors it appears to be normal, as far as health is concerned. Fluharty says he feels it will live for quite some time. Young Mike trapped the animal, Friday night, using an old bird cage—about two feet square made of frame and mesh wire—his dad had remodeled into a trap for him. The catch ended a wait of about three weeks that the New Hope boy had used in trying to trap the elusive animal. Trapped It Friday The father said Mike saw the odd-looking creature when it came up from the fields to eat with the other pet cats on the Fluharty place early last month. The catch was made on the front porch of the Fluharty home, about 9:30 p. m., Friday. The father said he was watching the College All-Star-Pro football game on TV, but not young Mike. He was more interested in trapping the “kit-bit”. Mike had gone to bed, but not to sleep. He had his trap set on the porch, all baited with bread, with the front light on. About 9:30, the quary came up, crept into the trap and Mike pulled the string attached to the trap, clos ing the door on the half-cat, half rabbit. SHALLOTTE HARDWARE Glen Williamson, Prop. SHALLOTTE, N. C. Hurricane Season Is Here; Precautions May Save Life Nine hurricaaMS wrecked havoc in North Carolina during 1953 1960. The hurricane season is here again. Loss of life and property may be avoided if a few precau tions are taken. Take these precautions, at first warning of an approaching hurri cane: 1. Put loose material and move able objects such as garbage cans and porch and lawn furniture where they cannot be blown against the building or through a window. Raise and secure or re move entirely moveable awnings. 2. In seriously threatened areas, board up windows or put storm shutters in place, at least on the sides exposed to the most violent winds. Shutters should be secure ly fastened several hours in ad vance of the expected arrival of the storm. They are difficult to handle in high wind. Use good lumber and attach it firmly to the building. Make shift boarding or insecure shut ters may blow loose and do more iamage than none at all. 3. Garage and other doors hav ng large exposed areas should be secured particularly well. 4. Leave a window partially open on the side opposite that Fluharty said the animal at first appeared vicious, spitting and striking with its claws like a cat when anyone attempted to approach it in the cage. But, a larger—4’ X 4’— cage has been constructed; the Fluhartys brought one of the pet cats around and the “kit-bit” became so friendly it allowed the father of the family to pick it up and pet it. Now, the New Hope people fully believe that it can be do mesticated. They feel the trans formation from a wild animal to a tame “kitty-bitty” will take only a matter of time . . . just how long may be questionable! from which the wind is coming1, | to provide some ventilation and, j may help to prevent wind dam age. If wind or windbome objects make an opening on the wind ward side of the building, wind pressure will build up within the building. The open window on the lee side will allow the pressure to escape, minimizing the interior forces tending to lift the roof or push out the walls. If windows or walls are broken on the windward side, open more windows on the opposite side to help equalize the pressure. 5. Have handy flashlights in working order, extra food that would require little or no cook ing and fresh water in sterilized jugs, bottles or cooking utensile. After you have ridden out the storm, be careful to: 1. Boil or sterilize water until otherwise advised by your local GASOLINE TAX Farmers using gasoline in their farming operation and who have not received an application form for tax refund may get one at the County Agricultural Agent's Office. It must be filed before i October 2 to get a refund on Fed- , eral tax. __Til health department. 2. Don’t touch dangling or loose electric or telephone wires. 3. If driving, watch out for;! fallen wires or tree limbs and forj washouts and undermined pave ments. HOT DOGS— SANDWICHES— TRY DARI - MAID SHALLOTTE, N C.
