The Farming Guide
(By A. S. KNOWLES, County Agent)
Fertilizer dealers and bankers
should seriously consider attending
a two-day Soil Fertility School at
N. C. State College on September
14 and 15.
The purpose of this school is to
help North Carolina’s agriculture
through improved soil fertility
practices. Representatives of
banks and fertilizer and lime in
dustries serving North Carolina
recognize the importance of build
ing soil fertility to increase farm
income. The conference is organiz
ed as a joint effort of these
groups to (1) study present pro
duction levels, and potentials for
the future, and (2) to consider
ways for realizing thilse potentials
in the nearest possible future.
Registration will take place at
College Union between 8:30 and
9:30 a. m. on September 14 and
the conference will end at 11:30
a. m. September 15. Application
forms may be secured at the
County Agricultural Agent’s office
in Supply.
Those plants with pretty yellow
flowers growing in soybean fields
may cost you money if they hap
pen to be crotalaria. Most buying
stations will insist on soybeans
or corn that are free from crota
laria. Their reason is simple; cro
talaria seeds and plant parts are
toxic to animals. Soybeans con
taminated with crotalaria seeds
and plant parts are unfit for any
use unless the contamination can
be removed.
Processors of soybeans do not
want them because the oil meal
resulting from the crush would
not be desirable as livestock or
poultry feed.
Export markets don’t want
them. They have said, they will re
quest soybeans from some area
other than ours if they cannot
get soybeans here that are free
of crotalaria.
The Food and Drug Administra
tion has placed necessary restric
tions on the movement of grain
containing this contamination.
In most soybean fields where
crotalaria is present, there are
relatively few volunteer plants.
The cost of having these plants
removed by hand is relatively ex
pensive, but it may pay in the
long run.
A farmer knows that it takes
planety of fertilizer to grow to
bacco or any other crop, and Her
bert G. Scull of Acme knows
plenty about growing pasture
grass. He fertilizes his grass in
the summer months because he
knows that grass will not grow
much in the winter. With more
grass than is needed for his herd
of beef cattle his pasture is not
damaged by over grazing.
