Black both regulation conferei games to be played by thi As the double-A conference: enters its fourth year of football action, it is still composed of the same six teams that made up the circuit in 1960-61. These are Elizabethtown and Bladenboro of Bladen County; Whiteville, Tabor City and Chadbourn of Columbus County; and Shallotte of Bruns wick County. Two New Coaches Coaches in the WAA this year will be Charlie Regan and Lynn King of the defending champion Elizabethtown Yellow Jackets; Frank Thompson and Angue “Tony” Begley of Bladenboro’s Bulldogs; Buck Jolly, Jerry Cart rette and Paul Powell of the Whiteville Wolfpack; Woody Wil son and Dick McCleney of Chad bourn’s Panthers; Bermey Stev ens and John Small, Tabor City Red Devils; and Gene Winfree and Doug Henderson, Shallotte’s Pirates. Wilson, who replaced Hershey Hipps at Chadbourn; and Jerry Cartrette, who came to Whiteville when Jim Walsh resigned, are the only new mentors in the six team circuit. Play Opens Sept. 1 The loop begins action on Sept. 1, with only one conference game —Whiteville at Tabor City—on tap. It closes on Nov. 10 with non-conference action only. At least one league game will be played each weekend except for the weeks of Sept. 15 and Nov. 10. Official W accamaw champion ship play winds up on the night of Nov. 3 when Bladenboro plays at Chadbourn and Tabor City is at Elizabethtown. State Eliminations The winner of the conference championship, to be decided on a percentage basis, will face the champion of the Coastal. Games on it listed in capital let ters are conference contests; others are non-conference battles. 8-Man League Plays 47 Games By JIGGS POWERS (Border Belt Publicist) CLARKTON—A total of 47 con tests, including 45 official games, will be played by the 1961 teams in the Border Belt 8-Man Foot ball Conference. This was affirmed at a meet ing of the BBC officials—princi pals and coaches—held at Clark ton High School, Friday night. Some 15 officials from nine of 10 schools in the conference were present. Schedule Approved President Lewis Moore, princi pal of Rowland High School offi ciated. Rudy Brown, Rowland coach, was named publicity chair man at the meeting. The schedule was approved and it was decided that copies of the official card would be mimeo graphed and sent out by the president Dues, Referees Some $6 per school was set as dues for the coming season. This amount is to be sent in by each principal to be used in providing trophies for the championship and runner-up teams in the five coun ty grid league. The dues are to be sent to President Moore at Rowland. It was again decided to use the referees of the Eastern Carolinas Officials Association of Ft. Bragg, of which James A. Baker of Fay etteville is president. Present At Meet Coaches present at the meeting were Bud Hood of Hallsboro; Mickey Nance, Acme-Delco; Rudy Brown, Bill Hillard, both of Row land; Gene Barber, Laurel Hill; Abner Braddy, Maxton; Frank Hogg, Bolivia; Harold Ingram, Clarkton; Wilma Hughes, Tar Heel; Tommy Shutt, Waccamaw. Principals on hand were W. R. Lathan of Clarkton, who is also the conference advisor; Thurston Little, Tar Heel, former presi dent of the loop; Robert C. El kins, Hallsboro; President Lewis Moore, Rowland; and Fred Single ton, Maxton principal. Only Parkton of the member schools was not represented. Hallsboro and Acme-Delco of Columbus County; Bladen Coun ty’s Clarkton and Tar Heel; Brunswick County’s Bolivia and Waccamaw; Rowland, Parkton and Maxton of Robeson County; and Laurel Hill of Scotland Coun ty are members of the BB8MC. One Newcomer Laurel Hill is a newcomer to the loop, having withdrawn from the Sand Hills league to enter the Border Belt because of having less travel distance in the latter loop, it has been said. The loop became known as the Border Belt Conference in 1960, with Rowland being its first champion. Prior to that the league was known as the Four County Conference, with Halls boro capturing its first 8-man title in 1959, and its last six-man championship in 1958 when it was known as the Four-County Six-Man Conference. Bladenboro and Clarkton, along with Tar Heel were other champions of the Four-County loop and its predecessor, the Bladen-Columbus Six-Man Conference. Opens Sept. 8 The league schedule opens on Sept. 8 with games at Acme Delco (Riegelwood), Hallsboro, Waccamaw, Parkton and Laurel Hill. Prior to that a couple of non-league games will be played on Sept. 1, with Laurel Hill at Ellerbe, Waccamaw at Bolivia. The loop closes its official ac tion on Nov. 3 with games at Laurel Hill, Maxton, Clarkton, Riegelwood and Bolivia. The champion of the Border Belt Conference will be host to the Eastern (or State) 8-man championship football game on Nov. 17. Starting times of games will be 2 and 3 p. m. at Waccamaw, which has no lighted field; 7:30 p. m. at Bolivia; and 8 p. m. at! all other schools.
