Grizzly Bears Wear Radios Idea For Bird Watchers? Grizzly bears in Yellowstone^ National Park will soon wear miniature radios to broadcast their whereabouts to naturalists studying their habits. Tracking the grizzlies by radio is a new development in a long range study aimed at preventing their extinction. The National Geographic Society and the Na tional Science Foundation are supporting the project. Tiny transmitters, attached to the bears by a plastic collar, will broadcast a continuous signal over a radius of five miles or more. Directional transmitters will keep the bears' locations pinpointed despite rough terrain. The transmitters were developed by the Philco Corporation’s West ern Development Laboratories in Palo Alto, California. Bears Wander Afar Grizzlies wander long distances. Without transmitters, scientists would find it virtually impossible to keep tabs on • them. But the radio signals will keep broad casting even while the bears are hibernating. Frank and John Craighead of the Montana Cooperative Wild life Research Unit, leaders of the study, have already developed methods for capturing the bears so that transmitters may be placed on them. The animals can be caught in steel culvert traps baited with bacon, honey, and pineapple juice. They are then injected with a harmless muscle relaxant, that keeps them from moving while a transmitter is attached. The Craigheads also shoot bears on the loose with a special rifle that propels a harmless flying syringe which empties the : relaxant into the animals. The Craigheads developed the ] technique when they began plac ing distinctive yellow, red, and blue markers on the bears to identify them individually from afar. The plastic markers are looped through slits in the bears’ ears. By the beginning of the 1961 season they had tagged 77 bears. They estimate that 177 grizzlies roam the park. The largest tagged so far weighed 780 pounds. Weight tests show a bear may gain an aver age of three pounds a day during the summer. The Craigheads are making impressions and casts of bears’ teeth to evolve a system of esti D o jjg y d g e ‘61 CLEAN - UP! —★ Douty Motor Sales, Inc. “Authorized Dodge Dealer” 710 S. 17th—Used Cars 16th & Queen RO 2-3362 Dealer No. 2405 TV Program Schedule ______I WEOT, CHANNEL 6 WLLMD* GTON, N. Nothing Like Boojum Tree The strange boojum tree may be nearing extinction. Then again, it may not. No one knows very much about the boojum’s past, present, or future. Most botanists never have seen one, because it thrives only in the hostile central desert of Mexico’s Baja California, the Na tional Geographic Society says. Some dendrologists believe the boojum is a dying remnant of a large family. Others think the tree may be the forerunner of a new line. But everyone who has seen a boojum tree agrees on one thing —there is nothing like it. Upside-down Carrot One botanist describes the mating bear ages. The skinny boles may reach a height of 40 to 50 feet, tapering to a point from a base only a foot or 18 inches in diameter. Older trees frequently branch in an eccentric manner toward the top, sending out sinuous limbs. Sometimes the top of the tree itself curves downward until the tip touches the ground to form an arch. Natives of Baja California call the tree a cirio, or wax taper, because it suggests an altar candle. The boojum is not a cactus and not a tree in the usual sense. But it is admirably adapt ed to desert life and can grow in a place that goes without rain a year or more. The trunk’s resinous outer cylinder protects a large spongy core. When the soil is damp, the inner pith stores moisture. fond of tourists’ handouts as his mother, so he was transported far from tourist areas. A week later, however, he was back : again, having traveled 30 miles ( across country he supposedly had never seen. The Craigheads have already turned up one bit of information that may prove helpful to con servationists seeking to protest the bears. “For the last two years,” Frank Craighead said, “we have been unable to account for about half the cub crop the following spring. Almost' all the yearlings are accounted for as two-year olds. It is possible that there is a high cub mortality during the first winter.” If so, conservationists can look for ways to reduce the mortal ity. Today fewer than 1,000 griz zlies survive south of Canada. The sows have small infrequent litters. The grizzly’s wandering habits make it hard to protect. Conservationists fear that the grizzly may follow the passenger pigeon and Carolina parakeet into extinction. Dreamlike Landscape Joseph Wood Krutch, the writer and naturalist, wrote^ of the boo jum: “It dominates the landscape and imposes upon it an air of dreamlike unreality. If one is re minded of anything, it is either the imagined surface of some dis tant planet or of one of those reconstructed scenes from a re mote geological era when there were no real trees, only huge club mosses and horsetails mag nified to gigantic size.” It is startling to come sudden ly upon a grove of boojums. The tree got its popular English name from such an encounter. Godfrey Sykes, the renowned desert ecologist, first saw the tree in 1922. He gazed intently for a few moments and then said, “Ho, ho, a boojum, definite ly a boojum.” Sykes was thinking of Lewis Carroll’s poem, “The Hunting of the Snark,” an account of an expedition Co find a legendary creature which sometimes took the form of a boojum, an inhabi tant of lonely desert shores.
