The new grandstand will be 36 by 62 feet in size, and will be properly constructed with brick pillar foundations and creosoted lumber wherever the lumber comes in contact with the ground. Present plans allow for two large dressing rooms and a stairwell between the two seating areas. The backstop will have a solid board foundation two to three feet in height and a heavy guage wire will be stretched from the board foundation to the top of the grandstand the entire width of the seating area. Tobacco Survey Help To Farmer Information Regarding Dif ferent Varieties Will Help j Next Year; Tobacco Meet ing Planned According to a report just made available on a recent tobacco sur vey, farmers are doing well with disease resistant varieties that i have been recently developed. A. S. Knowles, County Agricultural Agent, says that the majority of Brunswick County farmers still plant Hicks Broad Leaf, but the state-wide survey shows nearly a j hundred dollars per acre more re turn on some of the disease re sistant varieties than on Hicks. This survey indicates that Coker 316 averaged 166 more pounds per acre than Hicks; that N. C. 95 averaged 187 more : pounds than Hicks; and that Mc Nair 10 averaged 147 pounds more per acre than Hicks. These varieties and other pro duction practices will be discuss ed at the Annual Winter Tobacco Meeting to be held at the audi torium of Shallotte High School on the night of December 13. All tobacco producers are invited to hear S. N. Hawks, Extension Agronomy Specialist, at that time. KIRBY Prescription Center Phone GL 7-6100 HOWE ST. SOUTHPORT, N. C. Bloomer Gir Virginia Walton was clearly thi outstanding player on the court Twice the Black Bloomers used < ladder to make their goals, bu well last season. One of these is Sally Ward, i top scorer throughout last year’! schedule. Also back at a forwarc berth is Jean Cochran, and team ing with this pair on the firsi team is Frances Smith, a fresh man who demonstrated good scor ing ability with the junior var sity last season. Brenda Jordan another freshman, is sure to plaj some at forward, and France: Edwards, a freshman candidate for guard, may also play some on the other end of the court. Fatty Jenkins is the only ex perienced guard returning, anc Charlotte Evans and Frances Ed wards have been running witl her. Linda Spencer is anothei possible starter who is sure tc get in plenty of playing time Other guard candidates include Lydia Long, Martha Mallison anc Reba Poindexter. Coach Pete Lee, has the un happy assignment of defending the Brunswick county champion ship with a squad which lost foui of its five starters, not to men tion several strong replacements Donald Dixon, 6-ft 3-in center, is the only regular back this year With him will be C. E. Murphy and Frank Rogers, both 5-ft; 11-in; and 6-footers Rodney Gar ner and Clive Dosher, all of whom started in at least one game last season. Jerry Spencer is a classy 5-ft, 10-in prospect who is show ing up well in his first year of cage play. Wayne Austin, tallest man on the squad, is without prior ex perience but may develop into some first line help. The same can be said of Ed Harper, 6-ft, 2-in, freshman. Other squad mem bers are Rip Howard, Kenneth Phelps, Mike Lee and Don Har dee. The Dolphins received a blow this week when Foxy Howard, of whom much was expected this season, became a scholastic cas ualty. on one such play Amaretta Pre vatte missed three consecutive shots while standing three fee above the basket. The halftime ceremony was an other exciting part of the eve ning's entertainment with a gooc show being presented by th< Cheer (?) leaders. This aggrega tion of some of Southports mosi curvacious beauties did not d< ; any cheering, but they amazec everyone with their complicatec marching until Bones Howard rar them from the court. In the Father-Son game it wai simply a matter of luck and £ crooked scorekeeper who allow ed the Dolphins to edge out then betters by a score of 47 to 45 At one point early in the game the Dads led the Dolphins to the tune of 19 to 2. Then one basket by Leonard Lewis sent the score to 19 to 17. About half-waj through the second period “Doc tor” White was knocked to the floor, thinking he was dead twc of Tom Gilbert’s assistants rush ed onto the court with a wire basket and carried him out to the hearse. Out in the hearse Doc is reported to have set straight uj and wailed “What kind of a hole have I got myself into this time?’ Meanwhile back on the playing court Foxy Howard, resplendent in a pair of vivid red basketbai: shorts(?), was filling in admir ably for the injured “Doctor’ by out-jumping Foxy, Jr. anc pumping in basket after basket— in the wrong goal, and this pro ~ HUFHAM'S MEN'S STORE THE HOME OF GLEN-MORE CLOTHES FACTORY TO YOU ! 123 N. Front Street WILMINGTON, N. C. vided the margin of victory for the Dolphins. "Pappy” Rogers did a good job of shaking the floorboards loose as he lumbered tirelessly up and down the court setting up plays and getting fouled. Little “Willie” Williams almost pulled the game out of fire for the "Dads” as he let loose a tremendous toss just after • the final whistle from the opposite end of the court. The shot carried a good fifty feet and almost hit the backbroad. “Slim” Murphy was also outstanding as he contained C. E. Jr., limiting him to only 30 points for the Dolphins. “Stump” Spencer's fi nesse with the basketball as he dribbled up and down the court (without ever taking a shot) also turned out to be a crowd pleaser. The Dolphins were obviously dis appointed that they could not trim the Dads by a larger mar gin, but then they have never been up against opposition of that caliber before. The Southport Boosters Club sponsored the games for the pur pose of raising a necessary $200 for new uniforms for this years Dolphin basketball teams. The proceeds from these two games, added to the proceeds from the 2nd Annual "Booster Bowl” foot ball game, practically assures the Dolphins of their new uniforms before the first regularly schedul ed basketball game rolls around.
