"The flshihg of late," said Gar land Vafnufn, "has been teal good. 1 brought 3,100 pounds of spots last Saturday; all of them caiight that same day.” The fish had been consigned (get this) to Morehead City, supposed seafood center in Coastal Carolina. Garland said that the trout fishing was mighty good, and that between 1,500 and 2,000 bushels of oysters are brought in to the landing in an average week this time of year. Besides quantity, he had a few words to say about quality also. “Gene Galloway caught 941 pounds of red roe mullet the other day. I bought them and found only two white roe in that entire catch. I split 100 pounds of them and got 21 pounds of red roe from that 100 pounds of fish, if that’s not a record,” ended up Garland, “it's mighty close to one!” About then an Oldster came up. Garland introduced the newcomer, as Eddie OalloWay. 11 n .. —— Do ji y o ♦ SERVICE ♦ USED CABS t Som« Block 710 S. T7th RO 2-3362 WILMINGTON, N. C. N. C. Dealer No. 2405 Old Landmark W. H. And the patriarch of the Galloways calmly told of working for four years, from his tenth to fourteenth years, for twenty-five cents per day. Mr. Ed wound up his compelling story with the fer vent declaration that there was no place so favored as Varnum town! Along with the hard work of early years, according to this elderly citizen, went hard win | ters. The winter of 1917, for ex ample. That was the year of the big snow. Three and one-half feet of the white stuff, according to his memory. And the River froze solid, he reported. “There was the late J. H. Nance,” said Ed, “who threw a Men In Service Army Sgt. William E. Stanley Jr., 25, whose parents live in Southport, recently participated with other personnel from the 14 th Armored Cavalry Regi ment's 1st Reconnaissance Squad ron in a three>-week field training exercise in Hohenfels, Germany. During the exercise, designed to improve individual and unit com bat efficiency, Sergeant Stanley and other members of his unit tested newly issued military equipment including the M-88 re covery vehicle, the M-113 armor ed personnel carrier and the M 151 jeep, mounted with the M-60 machinegun. The members of Stanley’s unit, who were part of stick way out on the frozen river and told the boys that any one who would walk out and retrieve it could have his new double barreled L. C. Smith, 12-gauge gun. Claude Varnum, also deceas ed, was then about 30 years old. Claude went out and brought back the stick. Mr. Nance gave him the gun. Claude, said the river was several feet covered with ice, and claimed a horse and wagon loaded down with a ton of mullet could have traveled clean to Holden’s Beach without any trouble.” From the vantage point of Gar land’s boardwalk the view was truly inspiring. The spires of Howell’s Point were clearly visi ble across, and down the river. Just beyond the curve of the river lay Holden’s Beach. As the herons fly. Long Beach and Tran quil Harbour are right next door. Another man who played a prominent role in life ih this com munity during his day was the late W. H. Varnum, whose death occurred in 1958. Not only was he proprietor of a big general store and of a seafood business, Mr. Harry served one term as a member of the board of commis sioners for Brunswick county, having been elected in 1930. His shrimp house was a victim of Hurricane Hazel, and his big store building now stands desert ed. Business ceased there in De cember of the same year he died, and most of the commercial ac tivity of this unique settlement has moved to another part of the riverbank. It is best that the Varnum towns of America are on obscure turnings. New York City and Chicago await those who would be city-pent and the Varnum towns are being erased far, far to rapidly. With tJtem go a graciousness and a spaciousness that shall never return. ANNOUNCEMENT We Are Happy To Announce That The Fol lowing Mechanics Are Now With Us: — Carnell Raulerson—Bolivia, N. C.
