Hostility Among Animals Studied By Psyclioligists Animal psychologists are study- >1 ing hostility among birds, main- i mais, fish, and other creatures for clues to aggression by hu man beings. The scientists report that fights break out among lobsters, crabs, and crayfish during the breeding season. Birds ruthlessly attack other birds entering their domains. Wild sheep and goats engage in deadly duels. Ants make war, the National Geo graphic Society says. The dove—an emblem of peace —will mercilessly peck an op ponent to death. The gentle roe deer is a wanton slayer. Yet, the wolf—a symbol of bloodthirsty rapine—may chivalrously ‘spare an opponent’s life. Harbor Hostility In the spring, the young ani mal’s heart may turn to hate as well as love. Dr. Konrad Lorenz, the famed Austrian naturalist, has reported that certain fish called cichlids seem to have a compulsion to attack during the breeding season. it no rival male is present, a cichlid will attack its own mate. Fish observed in aquariums satis fy their hatred harmlessly, how ever, by making a few motions at a rival seen through the glass. Some birds have found ways to control their hostility suffi ciently to make community living possible. Dr. Martin Moynihan, director of the Smithsonian Insti tution’s wildlife reserve in the Canal Zone, reports that the green honeycreeper releases hos tility by making flying passes at another bird of the same species. The game continues for sev eral minutes with no blow being struck. The birds thus rid them selves of enmity, just as some men release aggressive impluses through participation in sports. Though it raises a problem in social relations, hostility serves a useful purpose in nature, Dr. Moynihan says. Because birds stake out territories and defend them, a species spreads out over a wide range and each individual has a reasonable chance for ade quate food. Otherwise, too many birds would crowd into favored places, and starvation would re sult. Mutual hostility can cause birds to fear each other more than natural predators. The strand ed bird flew in one direction after another. Each time it was stopped by an invisible barrier—the song of another cardinal defending its domain. Surrounded by its hostile fellows, the cardinal soon fell victim to an owl or h#wk. Defeated Wolf Spared In a wolf fight, a defeated ani mal voluntarily offers the bend of its neck, the most vulnerable part of its whole body. A single bite into the jugular vein would kill the loser, but the victor stops. Controlled by an instinct as powerful as that of the car dinal defending its territory, the wolf cannot dispatch an opponent making the gesture of submis sion. Eventually the victor moves away, and the loser escapes. Like wolves, dogs will spare the life of opponents making the gesture of humility. Many birds also will respect an opponent’s appeal for mercy. A supplicant jackdaw bows its head. A sea LOUIS KRAMM*S T. V. SERVICE Have Your Set Repaired Where The Repairs Can Be Made Right. A Cornell University ornitho logist, William A. Dilger, theo rizes that the strange phenom on arose to prevent the extinc tion of a species through inter necine warfare. He points out that wolves, lions, and tigers seldom fight strenuously among themselves, because their injuries would be severe. But many meeker ani mals like rabits have not learned the technique of ritualistic ag gression. They fight to the death. Professor Dilger believes that man has a problem in that he has not learned how to demon strate power without killing an opponent. Animals often bum up anger in actions that do no harm. A fiddler crab, frustrated in love, makes repeated gestures with a claw. A raven, fearing to attack a superior, tears up grass in im potent rage. Howling monkeys confine their aggression to vocal threats. Rat, Cat Make Peace Hostile instincts can sometimes be changed dramatically. A Tu lane psychologist, Dr. Loh Seng Tsai, taught a rat and a cat to live peacefully by giving them food only when they worked to gether to press levers. Curiously, only two kinds of animals engage in organized phy sical conflict between groups of the same species, biologist Julian Huxley says. The two animals are men and ants. The girl having the highest score in each parti pating school, and certified as to character and reputation by her school principal, will be eligible in the competition of the state in which the school is located. The awards will include a $4,000 college scholarship as 1st prize in the U. S. The Search for the American Homemakers of Tomorrow is de signed to help the school in pre paring today’s young women for their all-important role of the future. It is also intended to focus attention on our schools and the essential part they are playing in shaping the destines of tomorrow leaders. The official 1961-62 basketball season has finally gotten under way. Union began it’s season by defeating the girls and boys of Pender County Training School. The scores were Union girls 31— Pender girls 23. The final score for the boys game was 58-49 in favor of Union. The two coaches Mr. Richard Lyons, coach of the boys team, and Miss J. A. Gore, coach of the girls team, have high hopes for the two squads this year. The boys varsity team of Union has an overall record of 2 for 0. One of these wins was a non-conference game against the Blue Jays of Wilmington. The Union High Chapter of New Farmers of America held regular meeting on Tuesday. Their special guest was Curtis Mitchell, a former member of the Union High Chapter, now serving in the U. S. Navy. stingers, and trying to bite off each other’s heads.
